Welcome
Welcome
This is my personal website where I try out ideas before I use them on other websites I look after. So you will find a odd assortment of pictures, text & Links
I arrived at this building in 1974 and left in 2015
Happy Days
Liverpool Polytechnic Students 1970
I am a retired University (Polytechnic) biological sciences laboratory technician, and have used computers from the days of DOS & 286’s. This does not make me an expert – in fact I find modern computing more complex and irritating
I create & maintain websites and Apps for small local groups.
Below are few links to examples of my work
The website you are looking at now was created in Google sites and is hosted by Google
This is all free as is the domain name of the site
https://sites.google.com/view/colin-a-l/
I also have a Wordpress site where I practice using that publishing software
https://colinqqaz.wordpress.com/
I used the free version and they host the site for free
Although I am not sure if they do this for new sites
Although Google Sites is free and really good, I would recommend use of Mobirise - free version to create a website but I would pay for a domain name & hosting
I find wordpress a bit of a pain to use and the free version puts adverts randomly in your website
most modern website design software alters the layout of the pages to suite PC / Tablet / Phone views. It can move text and picture about and crop pictures
My latest website records the Fruit Trees in a walled garden, at Dibbinsdale Nature reserve
Fruit Trees of Dibbinsdale (google.com)
FRIENDS OF PORT SUNLIGHT RIVER PARK
The Friends of Port Sunlight River Park. http://www.friendsofpsrp.org/
A former landfill site now a nature reserve, on the River Mersey.
I took over looking after this website.
It was created with WordPress - free
but has paid for hosting with Heartinternet.
This was a Nottingham based company but is now based in Bulgaria. Still has a .uk extension. Having had previous dealings with this company I was rather not-delighted to discover this.
A nightmare of a company to deal with. I would not recommend them

FRIENDS OF PORT SUNLIGHT RIVER PARK - History Trail - App - Printed Guide
The Friends of Port Sunlight River Park - History Trail https://sites.google.com/view/portsunlightriverpark-history
Designed and hosted for free on Google Sites
App trail developed using Geotourist https://geotourist.com/tours/4097
Although now I would probably just use QR code links to webpages.
Like the excellent Welsh history site https://historypoints.org/
This gives more control, for example there was a period when GeoTourist made it far too complicated for visitors to use. Thankfully they have seen their mistake.
Printed guide, education packs & display boards produced in collaboration with a great local Graphic Design Company Neatnik Designs
Mayer Park Bebington
MAYER PARK
Mayer Park, Bebington, Wirral https://www.mayerpark.org.uk/
A small urban park, in part a Victorian Garden but gradually expanded.
I created this website originally as a Friends of Mayer Park Website.
But I have decided to make it my own website about Mayer Park.
I am also creating a Tree Trail App for the park using the IZI Travel app
https://izi.travel/browse/772f8457-a5b1-4d7d-96b4-a6ebb60d94d1/en
This seems to be the best app at the moment for this sort of trail, but it is rather random in its menus and how it works. But I am still learning.
