interior of Mayer's Egyptian Museum, Liverpool
Joseph Mayer is a person linked to the development of Lower Bebington, Wirral, but he is also responsible for the founding and quality of the Ancient Egyptian collection at World Museum Liverpool.
As a member of the Wirral Ancient Egypt Society I though it interesting to explore this aspect of life.
His story is often told but its strange how many people do not see this dominate aspect of his life & death.
Joseph Mayer was not only a great collector of antiquities, and wrote many books on the subject and was also an artist. He also had a passion to share his collections with the public.
His collection still forms the basis of the Egyptian collection at the World Museum Liverpool
The pictures are from James O'Keeffe's BLOG: CHARLES DICKENS AND ST GEORGE’S HALL, PART 3 - St George's Hall (stgeorgeshallliverpool.co.uk)

Statue of Joseph Mayer. In St. Georges Hall, Liverpool. By his left foot are a pile of books symbolising his love of knowlege & his foundation of the Bebington Free Library.
Hidden behind his right foot is a copy of an ancient Egyptian artefact from his collection
Votive from the tomb of Nebamun. The original was destroyed in the May 1941 blitz of Liverpool.
This is referred to as a ghost artefact
