As you can hopefully infer from the rest of my administration and service, having an engaged and invested community is extremely important to me. Most of my work has been centered around developing an involved, inclusive, lively community within the university and department, where one can collaborate and engage in scholarly discourse openly and freely. Plenty of my work to develop a cohesive identity within the graduate student community of MSU's Department of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering has been an uphill battle, but progress has been made. I'm proud that this progress has been substantial and tangible enough to be recognized by the faculty in the department to such an extent that I've won an award for it. For more information regarding this award, refer to this page.
Additionally, postsecondary institutions play a vital role in the community-at-large through education, support, and economic impact, as well as providing a source of pride and identity to the town or city at times. As such, I've volunteered to assist in AP Review Nights for high school students taking Advanced Placement classes in STEM.
To further explore the relationship education and support, I'm in the process of completing the graduate certificate in Community Engagement. This further shows that I:
value outreach and engagement as a scholarly activity
have mastered the set of core competencies
have put my scholarly and practical skills into practice in an off-campus community setting, and
have critically reflected on my community engagement experiences and the role of academia in the community
The mindsets and skills acquired through this certificate's training are fundamental in successfully engaging the community in ways that are collaborative, respectful, and scholarly. This caliber of work is paramount in establishing the higher education institution as a source of pride to their community.
