An experimental design and research project
ORIGINS is an exploration into culture and identity and the global systems that shape them through history, conflict, industry, trade, migration and politics.
It begins with the ordinary things that surround us — garments, fabrics, patterns, materials and objects — tracing their journeys through time and asks where they come from, how they travelled, what they mean, and what stories they carry.
Objects and textiles move across borders and generations through complex networks of history, trade, conflict, migration, industry and politics. Yet the circumstances, power dynamics and economic conditions through which they travel are rarely equal.
I trace these journeys, following materials, garments, techniques and visual languages across time and place. I look at how they are exchanged, adapted, commercialised, discarded and reinterpreted — and how their meanings change as they move across borders between cultures.
These objects become evidence: traces of previous lives and physical records of the cultures, economies and systems that shaped them. They carry histories, hidden stories and the marks of the circumstances through which they have travelled.
Through experimentation, reconstruction and material manipulation, existing garments are deconstructed, discarded materials are given new purpose, traditional techniques are reinterpreted and historical references are translated into contemporary silhouettes. Comfort, durabilty and function.
Nothing is treated as isolated. Every material has a history, and every history connects to something larger.
ORIGINS explores what happens when these fragments meet again — when different histories, materials and cultures are woven together to create something new while preserving traces of what came before.
It is an investigation into origin, identity, ownership and authenticity, questioning where things truly begin, who has the right to reinterpret culture, what happens when culture moves, and what we inherit from the past.
The work sits between research, fashion and contemporary art, using clothing and material as a means of investigating the systems, histories and cultural exchanges embedded within the objects we encounter every day.
Using waste textiles, discarded materials as a means of investigating the networks, systems, histories and cultural exchanges embedded within the objects
Ultimately, it is about weaving together new stories and cultures while preserving old ones.
The garment is the research.
The material is the evidence.
The collection is the conversation.
ORIGINS Looks at how value can be created in what already exists, through its history, provenance, use / function and transformation.
Exploring how clothing can carry value, gain historical significance and maintain cultural identity
Garments are no longer valued solely for their novelty or commercial appeal. New forms of value emerge, value that lies not only in the finished garment, but in its history, its material origins, its previous lives and the transformations it undergoes.
Adding value through transformation.
Existing fabrics become raw material.
Existing garments are conserved, and have a documented life. the focus shifts from latest trends and constant consumption to provenance, history and cultural preservation, with extended usage, reconstruction and repair at the cornerstone.
From the origin of the material used, to the added details, or the complex construction process, it starts to tell a story, a narrative is formed.
Nothing here is new.
All materials and textiles used to create these garments already existed. No new fabric was created.
They have already contributed to society. They have travelled a journey and have a unique story to share.
They carry history, stories of repair and each part of the journey, is built into every piece.

ETHICALLY SOURCED COTTON:
Our supplier only sources organic cotton grown in various countries within the SADC (Southern African Development Community) and adhere to the SADC's ethical and sustainable development practices and commitment to fair trade and regional integration policies and values.
Organic cotton is a natural, GMO-free fibre that uses less water than standard cotton. In addition, its production does not involve the use of chemicals or pesticides and encourages rotation of crops to keep soil healthier, more fertile and maintain humidity.
The entire production process is completed in South Africa, under one roof and consists of a fully vertically integrated manufacturing operation covering the full spectrum of textile and clothing production, including yarn spinning, fabric knitting, fabric dyeing, cutting, assembly and finishing of garments. Allowing our supplier to have full control of each manufacturing processes, including critical areas such as product quality and availability.
ORGANIC HEMP:
Hemp is one of the most versatile and eco-friendly fabrics on the planet. It is easy to grow, takes up minimum space and requires little water and no pesticides.
It is durable and provides all the softness and comfort of other natural textiles but with 3 times the strength, making it one of the strongest and most durable of all natural fibers.
It is long-lasting, ages well and does not wear out like cotton. The more you wear it, the softer it becomes.
Hemp is hypoallergenic, non-irritating to the skin and has more anti-bacterial qualities than any other natural fabric.
It contains no micro-fibers and has a natural resistance to mold and ultraviolet light.
It is breathable, wicks moisture away from the body and does not hold odours.
Hemp products are non-toxic, biodegradable and easily recycled. They are great for outdoor activities, including travel and work well with other natural fabrics such as cotton, denim, linen or silk.
