To encourage teachers to practice mindfulness, our initial prototype aimed to provide short mindfulness activities to teachers at the times that were most convenient to them. They could set notifications that coincided with their "coffee" breaks, or any break, which we believed would help encourage more practice and help build the new mindfulness habit. We also included more information from the experts in mindfulness for teachers in a separate section for teachers to explore the topics and activities deeper on their own time. Lastly, we implemented a "journal" section that allowed them to reflect on their their daily thoughts and mindfulness activities. Each feature was engineered to help the teachers reach the learning goals by offering convenient practice and opportunities for reflection.
After our initial test with a former teacher and fellow classmate, some key areas in our prototype were highlighted for their successes while others received some good critiques. Our tester thought that the colors and the user interface were appealing, the general flow was easy and intuitive, and loved having the ability to set the notifications to coincide with a teacher's breaks. She suggested that we add more intuitive and efficient navigation and recommended that we use the logo as a "home" button. To help us align our prototype and user experience with the learning goals, she proposed that we add a pre and post activity "survey" using emojis, which would allow us to see a teacher's progression in their understanding of mindfulness activities and their improvement in mental well being. For a better user experience, she also asked us if we needed all of the registration questions, which made us consider the necessity of each question. Overall, we gained many great insights from the test, and we took these into consideration as we moved onto the next iteration of the prototype.
