Focusing on shapes and texture of bubbles - Experimental
Bubbles have been typically used for enjoyment for children - using bubble machines or toys to create a satisfying range of bubbles which float in the air. The beauty and softness glides against the wind and reflects different lights which adds colour. Although, bubbles are created natural from vigorously moving water as it traps air of when we release oxygen within the waters from swimming.
I will be focusing on the textural elements of bubbles and how they look in narrow spaces. Bubbles created from using soap to using bubbles produced by those bubble toys.
The formation of bubbles is heavily present throughout, highlighting the various shapes and geometric shapes.
Its interesting how what seemed to be round bubbles becomes jagged and more geometric. The bubbles which are independent have a rounded sphere state but when collided together with others it reveals another view.
Because the bubbles are very malleable and soft it shatters easily - having only a think layer around trapping air inside. The properties of water are still kept meaning that reflections of light is present.
With this photographs various colours such as blue, pinks, purples, yellows and oranges are scattered around together.
Using a micro lens, I will capture different shapes and sizes of bubbles in glass cups or bowls. I will also change the placement of the lights to change the different of the colours/reflections.
Ii will also experiment with the colour of the lights to create different coloured reflections.
SETUP :
Equipment - Glass cups, Soapy Water, Bubble Blower/toy, Directed Light Source, Coloured film sheets
A2 sheet of white card - curving it to create a smooth backdrop.
Placing the glass object/cup to the back centre.
Angling the light to shine directly behind the object.
Canon Macro Lens 100mm
PROCESS :
Place the white paper (A3) against a wall.
Placing the glass cup in front of the backdrop.
METHOD 1 : Using dish soap and a bit of water, vigorously shake/stir the liquid until it creates bubbles - foams up.
METHOD 2 : Using the liquid bubble toy to blow bubbles directly into the cup.
Angling the light source behind the cup
Photographing directly in front - using a macro lens.
METHOD 3 : Using diluted dish soap with a bit of water and used a straw to blow bubbles in the cup.
Overall, I continued to shoot with method 3 as it created the most amount of bubbles of a similar size. With using method 2 took too long as the bubbles would sometimes burst instantly when it came in contact with the glass. With method 1, this created quite small bubbles similar to foam rather than round bubbles.
EXPERIMENTAL PROCESS :
Because the light is quite orange/on the warmer side, I used a white plain paper to diffuse the colour, additionally dimming the light slightly.
I also experimented with using coloured filters to overlay on the light.
BRIDGE EDITING :
ISO 400 5.6 1/100
The original photograph is on the warmer side - orange tinted. I shifted the temperature to become more on the cooler side, and increased the contrast and whites whilst darkening the piece - lowering the blacks and exposure.
I cropped the image to focus more on the details - as the top of the photograph wasn't in focus and had too many smaller bubbles which distracted the view.
Using the Spot Healing tool, I removed any specs of dust or smaller bubbles which were dotted around the edges and inside of the larger bubbles.
I wanted to keep the photograph quite clear, removing any distractions or slight imperfections from the piece. Because I used a straw, there are quite a lot of tiny bubbles which formed inside of the larger bubbles - which in the photograph looks like dust.
