Submerging flowers in water to create a rippling/bubbling effect.
Lisa Sorgini is an Australian artist and photographer. Based in Sydney.
I will be focusing on her series titled 'Flotsam/Waterplants' investigating flora underwater. She captures the complex beauty of flowers, Sorgini focuses on all their details from their texture to their structure - highlighted by the drops of moving water.
“Constantly drawn back to using plants and flowers in my work, I wanted to strip back and simplify from my previous work and let the flowers speak for themselves, as though I am taking their portraits. The added element of water was initially a way to highlight the natural forms, colors and textures.”
This is one of her photographs taken from her Flotsam series. Capturing a burnt red flower floating in water with bubbles foaming around it.
The randomness of size and formation from the bubbles paints and interesting picture as each of her pieces are unique and special. Rather than fully submerging the flowers in the water, she places the half way in so that just the bundle of petals/flower sits calmly on the water. The bubbles are formed when the water becomes agitated - vigorously moving the water to create pockets of air. However, I think for her works she used a bubble bath - using small amounts of water in the water to further push the amount of bubbles created.
The white background and the roundness of the bubbles make what seems to be a typical photograph of a bouquet of flowers to make it more enchanting and mystical. With her photographs, the water is blended seamlessly with the white - being unable to tell it's water, but the bubbles create a fixed view that water is present.
The angles are typically taken from a birds eye view - enabling her to capture the full beauty and details from the petals.
I will recreate similar responses and using a variety of flowers with ranging colours. I use a small bath tub or a fish tank covered with white paper to create are similar setting. Using warm soapy water to make bubbles.
PROCESS :
Equipment - Small Bathtub, Soapy water, Bouquet of Flowers
Using a small bathtub - fill with water and add small amounts of soap into the water (carefully mix it)
Submerge half of the plant into the water (just enough so that the flower sits on top of the water.
Using hands, move the water around to create bubbles and move them to sit next to where the flowers are.
Photograph above the tub (birds eye view).
