Growth

Attending to Student Growth

Principle 1: We all have the potential

Fostering a Growth Mindset

Through a variety of lesson plans and activities at each level, we teach our students that our students that the brain is malleable; its growth is the product of our actions, habits, and practiced behaviors. In other words, no matter how old we are, we can grow our minds and learn new skills.

This has been of the utmost importance in our transition to online learning.

Building the Tech Infrastructure to Help our Student Thrive

From Blended ABE to Distance Everything

As we know, the need for more flexible learning options was not born out of the pandemic. As early as 2018, CNAS student surveys called for more distant learning options to increase opportunities for co-enrollment in HSE courses, for more flexibility, and for more individualized instruction.

Flexibility and Individualization - They're not just emergency requirements, They're future requirements

From LMS to Laptops

When we switched to distance learning, nothing was perhaps more daunting than bridging the equity gap. Over the past two years, we built on-campus technologies, from laptops available at all campuses and partner locations to establishing a tech team to provide student and teacher support along the way. Sparked by the pandemic, laptops became teacher devices and work stations and systems were established to disburse Chromebooks to students quickly, securely, and effectively.

Equal access and equal opportunity are what we have been fighting for - these needs will not change with a return to "normal"

Digital Badges

Digital Badges have been in the works for years at our school, but today we see what the hard-work was for. Showing qualifications digitally has never been more important for our students.

Changes from the Inside Out: Developing the CNAS Work Culture

Professional Development and PLCs

Monthly program PLCs have given our teachers opportunities to share ideas, insight, and best practices amidst changing school contexts. Teachers and staff are regularly given professional development opportunities from resources like OTAN, CalPro, CASAS, TopsPro, and CAEP. After attendance, teachers are encouraged to bring back what they learned to PLCs and given a stage to share. In March 2020, the tech team mobilized to share these resources in a rapid push to adapt to distance learning.

Collaborative Attitude & Work Culture

With the turn into March 2020, best practices shared around the copier and coffeemaker have shifted online. Developed from this same collaborative spirit, new platforms like virtual staff meet up days and CNAS Teacher Facebook groups emerged to continue these conversations. In addition, tech team members were given teams to coach and provide further tech and pedagogical support.
