JULY 12: Christ Is Our True Foundation
JULY 12: Christ Is Our True Foundation
Verse of the Day (KJV)
"Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name... For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect." — 1 Corinthians 1:12–17 (KJV)
The church at Corinth was experiencing division because believers were aligning themselves with different leaders rather than with Christ. Some proudly claimed to follow Paul, others Apollos, others Peter (Cephas), while another group claimed Christ. Their focus had shifted from the Savior to human personalities.
Paul reminded them that no human leader died on the cross for their sins. Christ alone was crucified for humanity. No preacher, teacher, pastor, or ministry should ever replace Jesus as the center of our faith. While God uses faithful servants to teach, encourage, and disciple His people, all glory belongs to Christ.
The same danger exists today. It is easy to become attached to favorite pastors, authors, churches, or ministries. These individuals can encourage our spiritual growth, but they are imperfect people. When our loyalty to a person becomes greater than our devotion to Christ, division and disappointment can follow.
Paul also emphasized that his primary calling was to preach the gospel. The saving power is not found in eloquent speeches or persuasive arguments but in the message of the cross. The gospel changes lives because it reveals God's love, Christ's sacrifice, and His power to save everyone who believes.
As followers of Christ, we should celebrate those whom God uses while remembering that every faithful servant points people to Jesus. Our unity is found in Him alone. When Christ remains at the center of our hearts and our churches, pride gives way to humility, and division gives way to love.
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus Christ to die for my sins and to reconcile me to You. Help me to keep my eyes fixed on Christ rather than on people. Guard my heart against pride, favoritism, and division. Teach me to appreciate those You have called to serve while giving all honor and glory to You alone. May my life reflect the unity and love that come from following Christ wholeheartedly. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Examine your heart today. If you have placed too much emphasis on a particular leader, ministry, or denomination, thank God for their influence while recommitting your ultimate loyalty to Jesus Christ. Look for an opportunity to encourage unity among fellow believers through your words and actions.
"Keep your eyes on Jesus, for He alone was crucified for your salvation, and in Him alone believers find true unity." (1 Corinthians 1:13–17)
