Below is the course I designed using the knowledge and theories taught in this certificate program.

Title:

Introduction to Digital Arts

Format: Asynchronized online course with some synchronized components.

Level of Learners: First year undergraduate Graphic Design and Communication students

Course Description:

This course is an introductory course that provides students with the basic knowledge, vocabulary, and skills needed to enter into the studies of design, photography, videography, illustration, animation and web design. Students will explore many facets of creating art using computer software and the art creation process using Adobe software. Topics include digital painting, 2D design, photo manipulation, image compositing, animation, 3D design, and human computer interface design.

Course Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain what visual language is and how the digital art world employs it.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the creative process and development techniques for art making and problem solving.

  • Employ visual language and design concepts to the creation of art and design.

  • Utilize graphic software for visual communication and expression.

  • Create original artwork using Adobe Photoshop.

  • Critique art projects using professional language and online etiquette.

Typical Activities and assessments:

Activities include Video Lectures, Analyzing Sample Artwork, Software Tool Demonstrations, and Design Projects.

Assessments include Online Discussion, Projects and Peer Reviews.

The sample unit I worked on in the PCOE courses was Digital Photography. This unit covers the following topics:

    1. What is digital photography?

    2. Digital photography's power and artistic style.

    3. How to apply compositional principles of the Rule of the Thirds and the Golden Ratio to photography artwork.

    4. How to correct, polish and finish digital photos using Adobe Photoshop tools.

Contextual factors for designing this project:

Our college is moving toward offering more online courses. With the current COVID-19 atmosphere, offering quality online courses is a requisite for effective students’ learning. This course will be a new online offering. The content will be based on a face-to-face course I am currently teaching. I plan to offer this course in Spring 2021.
