The responses on these page are intended to briefly answer general questions you may have about your rights as a member of the FA. In many cases, there are details and nuances in a given situation which would be too lengthy or specific to include here. The full contractual language can be found on the District HR Website. Please reference the contract directly or contact a Union (FA) representative you feel you need further guidance than this page can provide. Clauses pertinent to most part-time faculty concerns are in Article 18 of the contract.
You can find the current version of the contract on the District HR Website.
The Faculty Association website is also a great place to read union updates, find contact information for your representatives, review seniority lists, and find information about your professional responsibilities.
You may have heard something called the "67% law", which places a limit on the number of units (hours) an adjunct faculty member can teach each semester. In short, a part time faculty member can teach 67% of a full time load, which equates to 10.05 CAH (Calculated A Hours). Summer session, intersession, and office hours are excluded from the calculation. Professional responsibility hours also do not count in the 67% law.
You may be assigned to teach more than 67% of full-time workload limit in any one semester for limited periods (no more than two semesters within any period of three consecutive years). Please see Article 18J of the Faculty Contract to find language around your specific situation.
Professional responsibilities for part-time faculty include participating in program and subject matter improvement tasks. These tasks may include creating and assessing Student Learning Outcomes (SLO’s), Service Area Outcomes (SAO’s), Course Learning Outcomes (CLO’s), Program Learning Outcomes (PLO’s), program review and curriculum development. These tasks will involve working with your division and subdivision colleagues. The required number of hours depends on the number of units (CAH) you are teaching that semester. Part-timers are responsible for one hour of professional responsibilities per semester per CAH they are teaching. For example, if you have 3 CAH (one 3 unit class) you will fulfill the requirement with 3 hours that semester. If you do more than you are required, you can be paid at the “F-Hour” rate for the additional time with pre-approval from your appropriate administrator. Please see Article 18D of the Faculty Contract to find language around your specific situation.
We have multiple “Flex Days” during the year. A Flex Day is intended for staff development and will have programmed activities to enrich your working experience. If a part-time unit member has a class cancelled during a scheduled Mandatory Flex Day, then the part-time unit member shall be obligated to attend the same portion of the Mandatory Flex Day as the length of the cancelled class. For example, if the cancelled class was one (1) hour, then the part-time unit member shall be required to attend one (1) hour of the Mandatory Flex Day activities. Please see Article 18D of the Faculty Contract to find language around your specific situation.
