Our work deals with how climate change has affected nature in our region and in other regions of Greece. But especially in Aigio, which would be characterized as a "rural area", this phenomenon brings other, mainly negative consequences to the residents as well. In our opinion this is one more reason to push us not to let climate change develop into something bigger and ultimately destroy our planet.
To begin with, the first step to solving this problem is global awareness. All of us can say that we know what climate change is, but most of us do not understand the severity of its effects. If experts talk about it in schools, news programs on TV and radio or even write articles in newspapers and magazines people will become aware and want to help immediately and in more effective ways.
In addition, green energy is definitely one of the solutions that will make the biggest difference. Year after year, fuels such as oil are replaced by electricity, which will not matter if this electricity stream is produced by burning such resources. That is why it is time to use other types of energy such as wind or hydroelectric. Especially in Greece where most of the year the days are sunny, photovoltaic panels will help the situation quite a bit. Finally, we must not forget recycling, thanks to it, waste and the disadvantages caused by its decomposition in the environment are reduced. Also this process has significantly less emissions of harmful gases than the production of new goods will have and as a result people's footprint on the environment becomes smaller. These are just some of the ways we can tackle climate change. It goes without saying that at first it will not be easy to implement them, but for such an important purpose it is worth trying.
At the local community level there are also actions we can take. Our city, Aigio is a city located in a rural area. There are many farmers but also the majority of those who are not farmers by profession own estates. A move with a big impact would be to stop burning the prunings that emit greenhouse gases and use shredders instead.
But what do we do in our school? What actions have we focused on?
Environmental programs are implemented every year. This is also true this year and all members of our team are participating.
We participate in as many actions as we can. E.g. in "Earth Hour 2024", on March 23 all of us at home turned off the lights to support this global action.
We recycle, as you can see in the following photos. We recycle at school:
Bottle caps (in the school year 2022-23 we collected 100kg)
Paper
Plastic
Batteries
Ink cartridges
We try to adopt green transportation in all the Erasmus+ programs we participate in as a school. Of course, from Greece it is almost impossible to go to other EU countries without a plane, but for our transition from Aigio to "Eleftherios Venizelos" and also for our movements in the destination country, our first choice is the train.
