PROTYPO EKKLHSIASTIKO GYMNASIO, established in 1945, our school is one of the eight major Ecclesiastical Schools in Greece, comprising both Junior and Senior High School levels. As a state school located in the picturesque surroundings of Xanthi, at the foot of the mountains overlooking the town, we provide a unique educational environment that combines academic excellence with spiritual values.
Educational Framework and Values.
Until very recently the school name was GENIKO EKKLHSIASTIKO LYKEIO-EKKLHSIASTIKO GYMNASIO XANTHIS, and we updated our Erasmus registration with the new name on the 10th of December.
We follow the Greek National Curriculum, offering a broad range of subjects including Sciences, Humanities, Languages, Sports, and Byzantine Music. Alongside academic learning, we place special emphasis on spiritual education, promoting the values of our Orthodox tradition.
Our mission extends beyond religious instruction: we aim to instil in students the principles of European citizenship, encouraging respect for cultural diversity, cooperation, and shared responsibility. Students learn to value freedom, democracy, human rights, dignity, and equality—concepts that are central to both Greek heritage and European identity. Participation in the TAITH project allows us to live these values in practice, not just teach them.
Student Profile and Diversity
Currently, the school hosts 141 students aged 13–18 years, with class sizes ranging from 30–40 students in Junior High and 10–15 students in Senior High. Our teaching staff consists of 31 qualified teachers supported by 3 classroom assistants.
Students come from diverse social and cultural backgrounds, including other regions of Greece and neighbouring countries such as Bulgaria. Many are accommodated in the Ecclesiastical Boarding School adjacent to our premises. This diversity enriches our school community but also highlights inequalities—while some students enjoy broad educational and social opportunities, others face significant disadvantages. Addressing these disparities is a key priority for us.
Experience and Activities
Our school has a strong tradition of promoting creative and collaborative learning. In recent years, we have organised numerous cultural, musical, and environmental projects, both within the school and in partnership with other schools locally and internationally.
We actively encourage students to develop key competences through a wide range of activities, including participation in national Mathematics and Science competitions. These initiatives aim to foster critical thinking, creativity, and intercultural understanding.
Commitment to TAITH
Engaging in TAITH projects aligns perfectly with our vision of preparing students for life in a European and global context. Through international cooperation, we seek to broaden horizons, promote inclusion, and provide equal opportunitiesfor all learners. Our dedicated staff and supportive infrastructure ensure that we are ready to take on new challenges and contribute meaningfully to the TAITH programme
