1978 release "Breaking Away" , I got paid to have my service truck at movie filming and I got used in a great seen in the movie.
Jackie Haley - Dennis Quaid - Daniel Stern - Steve Dodds
Sheldon Weiss; Tony Chachroan; and Mark Korman raced hard all day to set Jim up to finish the win.
Our 1st shop Bicycle Doctor USA winning Bike in Little 500 . It all started in 1977 Phil Frank at AEpi called our shop and ask me if we could help them Win Little 5. AEpi needed a Professional Bike Mechanic.
We had a unbelievable run together! AEpi was good to us Financially and in addition I ALSO wanted a Championship RING and winning Number plate off the bike. I was at AEii Fraternity house with my service truck almost everyday prepping bikes for training and Building special bikes for the race .
Out the gate we had great Success that first year 3rd and just a few years latter we won it all . I got to give credit to all those Riders ahead of the winning team that pasted that Knowledge , race strategy forward, We all got better togetter how to train better each year and make those bikes/wheels faster every year.
AEpi kept their part of the deal in 1985 , I still HAVE that Little 500 championship ring in our show case!
Takes 3 things to Win Little 5 : #1 Riders that train hard and mentally toughess and focused like no other rider #2 Blessings - Luck to keep you out of all the acidents other perils of racing #3 Best Bikes built by a Master . When all things are equal that bike and our hand built super wheels can make the difference .
Starting in 1978 Race AEpi went for it and got a Professional Bike Mechanic to work for them full time. From 1978 till 1987 our shop exclusively built bikes and wheels for AEPi . The Results where amazing for all. In just three of those years togetter 1984 we lost by 1/2 a wheel . 1985 Won by 1/2 wheel and 1986 lost again by 1/2 wheel. What we did togetter was still amazing but I aways think back, cound have been three in a row. Maybe if I had did one thing Different added a few pounds of tire pressure or something else all within my control. After 2 hours of hard racing tire pressure changes , I was afraid the heat on track surface on those two 2nd place finishs would blow the tire and went the safe path may or may been the right path . I have no regrets we won and two 2nd and a win not a bad day!
Have many friends from AEpi that check on us from time to time. A few have come back to get bikes or ordered bikes and parts from our shop over the years. In was a bussiness arangement to win Little 5 but it grew into friendships over little 500 many races and training seasons togetter over the years.
After 1988 Eric was helping full time at shop we took on up to three men's teams each year and one woman's Little 500 team each year . Out the Gate in 1989 SAE set on the pole and same year women's team Beyond control using our hand-built wheels and spokes and won women's 2nd little 500 race. More on the other 9 wins latter.

It was in late 1977 or early 1978. I remember when your truck pulled up for the first time and we were all excited to see your cool truck and all the good stuff inside; get some real advice from you as an expert; learn how to set up our bikes; and keep them in good repair. And I bought a bike from you as well. I was completely broke at the time, but spent every penny I had on bike equipment. It was well worth it! We knew nothing, and it was great to watch you in action. And sometimes “little” Eric would jump out of the truck and we called him the little bike doctor. 👍 That year I was a freshman. The team at that time was: Larry Micon (Hall of Fame); Todd Emoff (All Star Rider); Mike Langer; Jon Mandelbaum; Mike Emoff; and me. Then most of that group graduated, and then it was me; Mike Emoff; Mitch Emoff; Rick Yale; Scott Baruch; Jon Mandelbaum; Stu Katz; and a handful of others on the team. From 1978 to 1981…qualified 3rd; Finished 4th; 7th; 25th (bad wreck in Lap 1…ugh); and 6th. And then Jim Pollak arrived with Sheldon Weiss; Tony Chachroan; and Mark Korman…and we finished 4th; 2nd; 1st; and 2nd. I did break my jaw in the old stadium, on turn 4 during practice. I was the second bike in the pack. The lead bike hit the curb and went down. I went down, and then bike # 3 rode over my head and snapped my neck into the cinders. Jaw was broken and I had it wired for 4 weeks. Drank Ensure for 30 straight days. I can’t believe that was 45 - 50 years ago. Seems like yesterday! Good memories (except for the jaw).

Phil Frank with AEpi Team 1978 I still remember that call from Phil it changed our lives and helped AEpi win a race .

One of 5 from 1985 AEpi Championship Rings Given to the Team by the Student Foundation in my show case.
I love that ring, But the winning bikes mean more to us at the shop. I call them rideable art work or rideable Trophys. all of them still have track cinders on them from day they came off the track and now hang in our shop.

Yes I am a old school Bloomington Cutter that grow up in Bloomington Indiana, but never on the Cutter cycling Team. My childhood Friends Hank West (0wner www.bikejerseys.com ), Terry Dix, Ted Miller, Ted Frame and Myself Steve Dodds (owner www.bicycledoctorUSA.com with my son Eric, a Cutter, a bike Builder and SAE) lived the life of the Cutters in the 60s and early 70s. We lived next to the Quarrys and spent almost every spare day each summer swimming at the local Quarry's in and around Bloomington, Indiana and cruising the Indiana University campus as we all got older . At the time growing up in Bloomington we felt the emotions of the movie cutters. In 1979 I was in the movie Breaking Away. Another team we love , we built them the best bikes and super wheels we could in 1999 , Jet spent a lot of time at our shop during thsat sesason getting race bikes ready for race. Great teams start training shortly after this years race over . Train almost a year for one two hour race . if your in the race, know some one in the race or go to the race you wll understand .
As you can see on the faces That was a happy day for all ! eric built the bikes for SAE and Sig Eps that year , eric was working in SAE pit that day and I was in Sig Ups. it was all good Eric built same bikes and wheels for both teams .
They trained hard and deserved a win , had the Blessing/luck and supper bikes to do it. was a fun team to work with.
When Bill Naas arrived and his brother Jeff arrived they took the Knowledge , how to training , race strategy that previous SAE teams we worked with to a new level . This Team never won, but they did win, they set the new standard for training that SAE riders that followed for SAE glory, that's a story for latter. In 2002 Corleones many called independent , they where all SAE riders that won Little 500 that year. with a little more Blessing or luck this team could have one 3 maybe 4 times . Still finished high and vary proud to have worked with them . Bill sons are now racing hope they get a win! We also loved this team. I will not pick a Favorite team from all the teams we worked with but if I had to I will never tell anyone, they all where great.
Bill Naas still holds the track record for the fastest lap 30 + year on our bike hand built super wheels we built in shop for that team.
Above Photo: Eric Dodds 7 time Tour winner Lance Armstrong at the Little 500 Bike race before his wins where taken back.
"I've attended Super Bowls, World Series and the Monaco Grand Prix, but the coolest event I ever attended was the Little 500. It's a fifty-mile relay bike race at Indiana University, and the teams get a lot of enthusiastic support. Every sports fan should see it live." Lance Armstrong
Above Photo: Photo of myself with my friend Bill Armstrong in a packed stadium with 20,000 plus fans in the back ground. Bills the man we all give credit to for the world best cycling event in the US the little 500 race. The Little 500 Bike stadium named after him, Bill Armstrong Stadium is home to the Little 500 bike race, the NCAA National Champion Men's Soccer Team, and the Women's Soccer Team. I just happen to be at the Bloomington Hospital when I ran into him for the last time, it turned to be a few days before his passing, I spent a few minutes talking Little 5 not knowing he would be gone in a matter days.
Lets give credit to those early SAE riders teams that showed This team how to train hard gave them the Knowledge and strategies to win . You can not win Little 500 if you do not know how, it's a big learning Curve for all. I can say our bikes got better every year, and the riders got better every year. Our shop never had an Illegal bike and never got a Penalty and the bikes where always the best.
This team like all teams' road on the Backs of others that showed them how to Win.
They may have made rules or changed rules because of what we did to build those supper bikes back in the day , all our bikes where within the rules every year, we where thinking our of the box for the lightest / stongest / most reliable , fastest bikes and hand built wheels possible. All wheels and Bikes backed by Eric and steve and support all the way up to and including Race day .
It took more than super bikes and wheels we told many teams if your not going to train hard and give it all you got with no distrractions your wasting our time and your money .
We got the honor to work with Cameron L. Martinez Jr
Little 5 Prop master with his assistance Tyler Bello and staff.
Swimming at the local quarry!! Yes I'm Cutter and remember the days at the Quarry in our youth.
When we were young boys in the 60s not many summer days passed without a dip in the quarry close to our house. Swimming, playing and exploring the quarry was a true adventure. I think we understand what famous explorers must have felt like. Much like Columbus discovering the new world, Carter opening up King Tut Tomb, Jacques Cousteau under water ,Wright brothers & their pursuit of flight . and other famous explorers.
At 10-15 years old our adventures were a lot more important. We would walk by the workers and jump in the water filled worked out quarry holes that filled with fresh spring water. In the 60s if you got hurt is was your fault, the workers & owners never said a thing to us. With today's law suits and liability issues its hard to get permission from quarry owners and heartless & sole less corporation. I, yes I still feel that adventure of 40 plus years ago discovering a new world.
