On Friday, November 8, 2024, students at Eisenhower Junior High School broke and reclaimed the world record for the Fastest Human Conveyor Belt. They originally set this record in 2005 by transferring a mattress over a distance of 180 feet in 2:01 seconds, but their record was reportedly broken in 2012 by a school in England who did the same thing in 1:54 minutes. On Friday, November 8, 2024, 104 students at Eisenhower Junior High School transferred a mattress weighing 12.5 pounds over a distance of 180 feet in 1:35.64 minutes (or 95.64 seconds--rounded to 1:36 minutes).
The world record for the Fastest Human Conveyor Belt is recognized by The Book of Alternative Records (headquartered in Germany). The rules for the Fastest Human Conveyor Belt state that "During this record attempt one hundred or more people must pass a weighted object (usually a mattress) at least four feet long and weighing over ten pounds along a human conveyor belt that is 180 feet long as fast as possible. This weighted object must be passed by people lying flat on the ground who transfer the object as quickly as possible by rolling their bodies in the same direction while avoiding the use of their hands, arms, feet and legs. Heads and chins can be used to guide the object or keep it on course. If the object falls off onto the ground the attempt fails. The time of the event is based on when the front of the object crosses the starting point and later when the front of the object reaches the ending point, with the object having traveled 180 feet."
Faculty members of EJHS have said that “When schools attempt world records their students learn important skills-- including communication, concentration, cooperation, creativity, logistics, organization, problem-solving strategies, self-disciple and respect for others." EJHS students will be helped in this upcoming after-school record attempt by past and present faculty and staff members of the school.
This world record attempt was judged and verified by officials and professionals of Taylorsville City, Utah.
Eisenhower's new record for the world's Fastest Human Conveyor Belt was officially accepted by The Book of Alternative Records in Germany on November 25, 2024, and published on its website on November 30, 2024.
