The practicum served as a means to assess my knowledge and skills in a real-world classroom setting. It provided an opportunity for me to apply the concepts and techniques I acquired from my observations to actual teaching situations. It also allowed me to gain valuable hands-on experience and receive feedback from experienced educators, helping me to further develop as a teacher.
The practicum is delivered in only one of the two chemistry classes assigned to me since I will be delivering the same material. The practicum lasted for ninety (90) minutes and was observed by my resource teacher, Sunartri, S. Pd., my supervisor, Muhaimin, S.Si., M.Sc., and my student buddy, Rustiana Ramadhani, who assisted me in my demonstration, especially in translating complex concepts and expressions.
The practicum has been successfully delivered. The students actively participated in the hands-on activities and demonstrated a good understanding of the concepts taught. The students showed great enthusiasm and were able to apply the knowledge gained during the practicum. Their engagement and comprehension of the material were evident through their insightful questions and successful completion of the assigned tasks.
Student discipline and motivation were never a concern, as the students were highly motivated and well-behaved. However, since the practicum took place in a foreign country, there were instances where language differences posed a challenge to effectively communicating with the students. Despite this obstacle, I was able to overcome it by utilizing visual aids, translations, and non-verbal cues to ensure that the students understood the instructions and concepts being taught.
After the practicum, I asked my students one last time if they understood the lesson, and they affirmed with smiles. I also asked my supervisor and resource teacher for their feedback, saying that my method of teaching is very interesting and engaging. They commended my ability to adapt to the language barrier and my creativity in finding alternative ways to convey information. Their positive feedback boosted my confidence as a teacher and reinforced the effectiveness of my teaching strategies for overcoming communication challenges.
My supervisor and resource teacher suggested that I continue to incorporate more interactive activities and visual aids into my lessons to further enhance understanding and engagement. Additionally, they recommended that I explore different teaching techniques, such as engaging the students in multimedia learning tools like videos that are delivered in Indonesian, so that they can practice their listening and comprehension skills in a real-life context. They also encouraged me to seek feedback from students and colleagues to gain insight into areas that need improvement and to continuously adapt and modify my teaching strategies accordingly.
