I am at a crossroads of cultures, entrusted with imparting knowledge and encouraging a love of learning. As such, I shall teach in classes and engage with students from diverse backgrounds, fostering an inclusive and multicultural learning environment.
This is a photo of me with Bu Nartri, my resource teacher, when I asked her to check my lesson plan to be presented for the next day which is my scheduled teaching session.
Through my collaboration with the local teachers and educators to exchange teaching methodologies and gain a deeper understanding of the educational systems in the host country, I can enhance my teaching skills and broaden my perspective on education, which I believe are vital for me to deliver a more tailored and effective learning experience to my students.
I will use the K–13 curriculum applicable at SMANCA as I teach Grade 12. The K–13 curriculum prioritizes students' competency development and comprehensive topic mastery. The curriculum seeks to foster intelligence, knowledge, personality, noble character, and the capacity for independence in high-quality learning experiences.
Since the curriculum is in Indonesian, I had to translate it first. My resource teacher also allowed me to teach in line with a few of the competencies stated in the K–12 curriculum of the Philippines.
I was tasked with teaching the Periodic Table of Elements to the two 12th-grade science classes in SMANCA. I crafted a semi-detailed 7E lesson plan. I planned to teach the lesson with traditional and digital approaches intertwined. I shall use a PowerPoint presentation to present the lesson content, such as the concepts and information about the Periodic Table of Elements. Capitalizing on the high-speed internet around the campus, I will have the whole class use an online digital periodic table of elements named PTable. I also plan to incorporate hands-on activities, like a traditional Filipino game, to encourage student engagement and active learning. Through this, I may not only impart learning but also share a part of my culture as a Filipino teacher.
I was informed to anticipate that my students may not always understand what I am saying in English, but I want them to make the most of my class, so I will also be translating the lesson content into Indonesian so they can better comprehend the material. Additionally, I will provide visual aids and contextualize learning by using local examples available in their school, community, and daily life to aid in their understanding. I find it essential to include real-life examples and applications of elements to help students understand their relevance in everyday life, making the lesson more relatable and practical. This multi-modal approach will cater to different learning styles and ensure that all students can participate fully in the lesson.
I am very much looking forward to seeing my students advance in their proficiency with the English language, in their general comprehension of the lesson, and in their appreciation of the diversity of cultures. Through my teaching, I strive to provide a warm and exciting learning atmosphere where each student feels encouraged and empowered to achieve.
