Morning and End-of-Day Routines
Procedures
Having an anchor chart to help students when they are transition to different things, such as morning meeting, is important because if by chance they forget any steps of what to do, they can look for the anchor chart in the classroom. During the first week of school, I will put up this anchor chart in my classroom and go over each individual step with my students. I will model the wrong way to transition to morning meeting, while also modeling the correct way and behavior that is expected when transition to morning meeting. I will then have my students practice transitioning to morning meeting as a class a couple of times that week so that they can get a feel for how it will actually go once we get into a routine. This supports teacher accountability as it is the teacher job to demonstrate/model the correct and incorrect ways to do a procedure in the classroom.
In the beginning of the school year, I will model how students should be working independently. I will also show what level our voices should be at during this working period, and how to see your eyes on your own desk so that you can focus on the work in front of you. I would have two brave students help me demonstrate to the class what to do and what not to do during quiet working time. I will have one student doing the correct thing and the other student doing the wrong thing. The class will then tell me which way is correct. Once they tell me their answer, I will ask them why they think that, leading to them giving me their reasoning. This connects to positive reinforcement because as the teacher, I will be providing good feedback to each student that helped to demonstrate how to work independently and for showing the things that students shouldn't be doing during independent time.
Within the past couple of years, technology has blossomed into classroom, especially elementary schools. I've seen that the younger grades have started using Chromebooks to do their work once they come into the classroom in the morning. In the beginning of the school year, specifically on the first day, I will show students how to take the Chromebook out of the cart with gentle hands, place it on their desk, open it carefully, how to sign in, and get on the apps they will be completing work on. The class will have little workshops in groups where they show the teacher how to use a Chromebook in the correct manner. This also goes back to Teacher Responsibility because the teacher is in charge of every student in the class and in charge of those students' education for the school year. It is the teacher jobs to make sure the students know how to handle Chromebooks since they are new to them.
During the school day, students have to line up and go different places. This could be going to specials, heading to lunch, going outside to recess, etc. Lots of other times students will argue and try to cut in front of others to be first in line, which can cause a lot of chaos. During the first week of school, I will tell all of my students that we are all going to the same place, so that there is no need for everyone to be in such a rush at the front. I will then model how to correctly walk to the front of the classroom, have my voice at a level zero, facing forward, and get in a straight line with my fellow students. I will also model how not to line up correctly, such as running to the line and yelling/talking to my friends when I'm in line. This connects with Building a Community in a sense because we are all kind and respectful towards one another, and there should be no shoving to get to a spot in line when we are all going to the same exact place. We must build a community around how we treat one another and not base it on chaos, being mean to each other, etc.
In the placements that I have been in, most of the students start arriving to school between the times of 8:30am and 9am. During this period, some students are getting breakfast at the cafeteria and others are getting dropped off via car drop off or bus. Since there are so many students in the school, many kids are in the hallway at once, creating a loud environment. On the first day of school, I will show the students how to enter the classroom in the right manner. This consists of using walking feet when entering the classroom, using a level one voice when greeting your teacher and peers, and going to put your belongings away. I will then explain to my class entering the classroom this way will help keep our classmates safe, as well as other children in the school safe. If we were to run around in the hallway and yell to get someone's attention, then people could end up getting hurt. This supports Teacher Accountability as it is in the teachers hands to educate the students on what is allowed when entering the classroom verses what is not allowed.
