High School Social Emotional Learning Handout
The handout provides visual cues about the relationship between the five areas of social emotional learning:
Social Awareness (Empathy)
Responsible Decision Making (Choices)
Relationship Skills (Collaboration)
Self-Management (Resiliency)
Self-Awareness (Reflection)
and provides ideas on how to handle stress or become more social within the school environment.
Social and emotional learning has their own set of standards and one applicable standard is required within a lesson plan. From this standard, "The competent teacher builds and maintains collaborative relationships to foster cognitive, linguistic, physical, and social and emotional development." This demonstrates the importance of this type of learning within the educational environment. At the high school level, students are still adolescents learning to cope with their maturing emotions and bodies. It is important to provide instruction, handouts and classroom visuals for students. This helps reinforce the environment provided by the teacher is safe and has resources to handle situations as they arise.
I have used several of the techniques in the handout and I have found them helpful. I hope to bring certain supplies such as coloring books and pencils for relaxing activities within my class. I want to be able to practice what I preach when it comes to mental health.
Awkward "Family" Photo
This is my student teaching "family" where each department at my cooperating school was charged with coming up with that awkward family photo. I include this artifact as it demonstrates the collaborative and fun relationship that I encountered within the business department. From the first day, I was welcomed and made to feel like one of the team. It didn't matter that I was a new student teacher learning how this all works. This photo was sent to the school facilitator where all departments awkward family photos were gathered and put into a presentation slide deck.
This standard emphasizes relationships among many people. This artifact is specific to team building with other teaching colleagues within my cooperating school. "The competent teacher builds and maintains collaborative relationships to foster...social and emotional development...This teacher works as a team member with professional colleagues..." I have established many different collaborative relationships in and out of the business department. This school has a very inclusive environment. This is demonstrated by this photo but also the complementary spirit wear that was given to me and the inclusion of my name with the rest of the super hero staff for homecoming week. This was very welcoming and another way the school and staff made me feel welcome and part of the overall school culture.
I have learned during my seventeen weeks of student teaching that collaborative relationships create an inclusive culture not just among staff but also the students. Students create their own spirit days which are unique and funny. Teachers have theirs as well and this promotes strong relationships throughout the school. This creates a positive learning environment for everyone as we support one another and know how to have fun but also when to get down to business.
Door Decorating Contest - Business Department
After my Fall, 2021 student teaching experience at St. Charles North High School, I was left looking for a full-time teaching position. There were no job openings so I applied for substitute teaching positions locally. It turned out that St. Charles North was looking for a 2nd semester building substitute teacher! I met with the Assistant Principal and was offered the position. As such, my "home" department is with the business team! They welcomed me back into their team and I participate in their staff meetings and building department activities. The latest department activity was to decorate your door to show school and team spirit. Majority of the departments participated in decorating their doors. The picture to the left is what I created for the business department. It reads, "Everything is awesome when you are part of a team!" which is a quote from the song in The Lego Movie. I created individual "Lego blocks" to scale with strips of paper and individually glued each "block" to paper background I put on the door first. Next, I created the quote using a Lego font builder and mounted it on different colored card stock. Finally, I created each of our department staff as a Lego mini-figure with each having their own unique look. The department staff loved the door and thanked me for taking the time and coming up with a creative idea. We are awaiting the contest results!
