The competent teacher understands the diverse characteristics and abilities of each student and how individuals develop and learn within the context of their social, economic, cultural, linguistic, and academic experiences. The teacher uses these experiences to create instructional opportunities that maximize student learning.
Characteristics & Causes of Emotional & Behavioral Disorders in Middle & High School
This paper addresses emotional and behavioral disorder characteristics and causes focusing on middle and high school students. These disorders fall under IDEA since they can affect the education for a middle or high school student. This includes, but is not limited to, anxiety, ADHD, eating disorders and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).
As standard 1 states a "competent teacher understands the diverse characteristics and abilities of each student and how individuals develop and learn." This artifact demonstrates my ability to understand these type of emotional and behavioral disorders. I am at an advantage with this category of disorders since I have two children of my own that each have a combination of these types of disorders. I have done my own research as a parent and have advocated for my children during various times of their educational career. I am equipped with tools to help understand a child with these disorders and manage their disorder within various settings.
This will make me an empathetic person and help the student feel I am in their corner and can address their needs in that particular moment. The disadvantage I have is I have not experienced all the various disorders so I will still be learning in the moment even if two students have the same named disorder. Each disorder is unique to the individual and I will need to be understanding of that and know when additional help is needed or when it is necessary to reach out to the parents. As I continue to attend professional development classes. collaborate with colleagues and teach students, I will gain knowledge on how to best serve the students and their unique needs.
Strategies of Emotional & Behavioral Disorders in Middle & High School
This document provides strategies on working with students at the middle and high school levels that exhibit emotional and behavioral disorders. As standard 1 states, "these students have diverse characteristics and abilities that affect their development and learning within the educational setting.
The strategies identified in this exhibit help to create the proper learning environment for these EBD students. These strategies are varied but all have the same goal of understanding the student and getting them to respect and trust the educator. This opens the EBD student's mind to reduce their stress or outbursts to enable learning and less distractions. The advantage I have with regards to this material is I work with this age group through Boy Scouting. Many of the Scouts that I work with on merit badge instruction have varied needs and I have to provide for much redirection and provide encouragement so they stay engaged and want to contribute to the situation. In some cases, I have provided this type of support and used the strategies to achieve the goal of learning the material and the Scout earning their merit badge. The disadvantage is that there are varied emotional and behavioral conditions that one strategy that works for one student may not work for the next.
As a teacher, we need to have an arsenal of tools and strategies at the ready so we can effectively manage any student regardless if they have an emotional or behavioral disorder. Through my experience I am becoming more aware of the importance of social emotional learning and the link it has to education. This prevents students from fully concentrating in the classroom and on their work; therefore, they may miss important details regarding the lesson. This potentially puts the student behind in the classroom and leads to feelings of overwhelm and low self-esteem.
Emotional & Behavioral Disorders in Middle & High School Presentation
This presentation provides high level strategies related to emotional and behavioral disorders for middle and high school students. This artifact was created as part of my coursework for Introduction to Exceptional Children where I learned about various challenges students with EBD face in their learning. The presentation reviews the various emotional and behavioral disorders students face and provides different strategies and resources for teachers and parents to support the student.
The standard notes, "The teacher uses these experiences to create instructional opportunities that maximize student learning." This is relevant for standard 1 as this will assist me in learning how to tailor my lessons and instruction to be able to better teach the affected students by these disorders. I will be better able to identify the students or connect with them since I have my own emotional and behavioral disorders. I can relate to what a student might feel or understand their perspective and blocks they may have when it comes to learning any subject. I want to be knowledgeable about all learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities and emotional and behavioral disorders so that I can be of assistance to the student. I want to get to know my students and show that I care about them as a student and a person.
This presentation demonstrates my knowledge of these disorders and that I have identified different strategies for assisting the student. The advantage I have with these disorders is that I too experience them in my everyday life and I have good days and bad days just like the student. I will need to model strong control to demonstrate to my students that you can work through these issues and not let them stifle you. They make me a unique person with strengths and weaknesses but they do not have to define me. The disadvantage I have is that I need to stay in control and not react to students like I may react to my family. If I do have a reaction, I will demonstrate proper coping methods to show my students that I can recognize when I need to take a moment and how to address the situation with control and respect.
