News Report 6/9/2012 : Earthquake rocks Edwardsville Illinois

Southern University of Illinois, Department of Earth Sciences.

Reporting Extreme Seismic activity, rating from 5.4 to 6.2; Five localized Earthquakes eminating from the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

The damage was localized to a historical neighborhood in Edwardsville Illinois. Millions of dollars of damaged historical homes is reported. The area was riddled with underground caverns and old coal mines that caused a number of sink holes in the area.

Property damage was the major trauma to affect the area. Luckily fast action by the local EMS departments saved many lives from the devastation of the earthquake zone.

As a side effect of the earthquake, the Madison County Department of Corrections reported massive structural damage to its western and northern wings of the County lock up. Allowing approximately 35 inmates and 15 transported criminals to escape the facility. By the early hours of Dawn more than 20 of the inmates were returned to custody of the County police.

The escaped convicts were able to incite looting and other acts of destruction and criminal activity all through out Edwardsville, Illinois and spreading into outlying communities.

A few local charities have set up funds to help the victims of this disaster.
