In January 2023, myself, Joanna Kidney, Elida Maiques, and Sue Montgomery spent a week in the wilds of Co. Kerry on a self-organised residency exploring, playing, experimenting and having conversations around topics that had been coming up for us both in our personal lives and in our work.
We spent our time making, walking, gathering, foraging, making marks, experimenting, processing, exploring, leaving offerings, drawing, stitching, keeping warm, cooking, breathing in the clean mountain air.
There was, fibres, rocks, soil, ink, intentions, sheep, mountains, fires, seaweed baths, birds of prey, snow, tiny footprints in the morning, moss, lichen, so many stars, and so much gushing running water. The mountains were alive with it.
It was a truly extraordinarily alive place, like stepping through a portal into an animate world we can often forget is always there.
By the end of the week we knew we wanted to work together going forward, to deepen our exploration of the questions that came out of our time together.
And so Moss Collective was born.
Moss Collective will be taking part in the Earth Rising Festival 2024 at IMMA.
