I am a Wicklow-based artist working through textiles and natural materials. I explore how handwork - with a focus on the process and materials, using minimal tools - helps us to understand the world and how we can simultaneously fit into it and yet be separate from it. I am interested in the atmosphere of our inner world in relation to the outer world we inhabit, and the inherent grounding interconnection between handwork and sense-making.
Science tells us we are enmeshed in the world, part of and wholly made of the universe. Yet how do we experience this? Or not? How and why does handwork bring us into a state of flow, of being consciously present, and how can this help us to function better in today's busy, fast-moving world? What happens if we allow ourselves to slow down, to focus on our hands and what they can make? What happens to our busy minds if we start to pay attention to the process? And what happens in our physical bodies when we do so? If we are part of an ecosystem what conversations can we be having with others in exploring this and how could handwork facilitate them?
Working with others - community as contributors - allows me to explore these relationships, through mutual care, commoning, cooperation, and reciprocity, which, for me, are necessary for this sense-making.
