My practice is also a socially engaged one. Over the last ten years I have been working in the area of community change and innovation, in particular looking at how we feed, educate, and house ourselves. I am a co-founder of several initiatives in these areas; Common Ground Bray, Wicklow Democratic School, and Common Ground Community-led Housing.
Common Ground Bray - founded in 2013.
This is a volunteer-run community space that is a social hub, as well as a place for learning, sharing and cooperating. While there is a focus on how we feed ourselves sustainably and affordably, we have created a network of people whose focus is on creating a positive impact on the community of Bray and it’s environs. We believe Common Ground reflects the diverse and multi-cultural nature of contemporary Ireland. We support our members in coming together in meaningful ways that enhance our experience of being a community.
Wicklow Democratic School is Ireland’s first democratic school for self-directed learning. Students at our school are free to determine their own learning path and structure their days in whatever way works for them, with the freedom to play and to fully immerse themselves in their passions and interests. We recognise the importance of mental and emotional well-being, and our community has built a culture of respect and restorative conflict resolution. Our students develop intrinsic motivation and learn to live their own independent lives based on their individual goals and aspirations.
The Common Ground Community-Led Housing vision is of a new paradigm for housing, living and working in Ireland. We envisage a housing solution which meets peoples’ fundamental needs for a safe home, to belong in a community, and to secure both of these needs for future generations.
