MAKE-ing a Difference

Welcome to Clifford H. Smart Design Tech!

Involving children in engaging creative and innovative practices has been part of my classroom for my entire career. I am so excited to foster my passions and integrate them into Design Tech at Clifford Smart Middle School.  There are endless possibilities of what will be accomplished during the semester, but here are some things I intend to do.

My Passions

This is my 24th year as an educator and my 22nd year teacher in Walled Lake. 18 of those years were spent at Glengary Elementary mainly teaching 3rd grade.  This will be my 4th year teaching Design Tech at Clifford Smart.

Project Based Learning has always been at the core of my teaching practices, and the Design Tech classroom is right in my wheelhouse. I regularly present at conferences both in Michigan and around the US on technology integration, computer science, and the maker movement. I have also published articles and contributed to books on technology as well as makerspaces.  I have had a makerspace in my classroom for many years now, and I made STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) a priority.   In 2018 I was awarded the Henry Ford Teacher Innovator Awards, and in 2019 I was awarded the K-12 Tech Using Teacher of the Year by MACUL (Michigan Association of Computer Users in Learning.)

I have spent 22 years as a team manager for Destination Imagination, a global creative problem solving program for K-University level kiddos.

My Family

I have a wonderfully supportive husband and teenage children. Carson is a student at MSU and Katelyn attends Brighton High School.
