STUDENT INTERVIEWS
Inspired by the junior caucus, we, as your freshmen caucus presidents, would like to do something similar. We understand that freshman year is a valuable time to socialize with other students and create friendships. With so many tests and after school activities, we understand that getting to know other people may be difficult. Freshmen student interviews would help solve this issue using a simple process. Every two weeks, we will send out a special prompt (e.g. tell us the name of someone who you think drinks the most coffee) to the freshmen class and ask you to nominate either yourself or a friend who best fits the prompt. After one week, we will, with your consent, interview you, share it with the rest of your classmates on social media, and create a more engaging community!
FRESHMEN BOARD
The Freshmen Board will be a space for freshmen and other students to write fun and inspiring stories that motivate you. We understand that freshman year can be an emotional roller-coaster. There may be days when you just got a bad grade and want to hear some words of comfort, or maybe you just don’t have the motivation to do something. On those days, you will be able to go to the Freshmen Board, a physical space where you can read notes from your very own classmates and peers! These handwritten notes can be anything from personal stories to little quotes that you think will help your classmates. This will help you realize that you are NOT alone, and that the students at Stuyvesant are here to support you!
LOUD-SPEAKER SONGS
In the beginning of the year, the student announcers played the entire school a fun song on the loudspeakers. We have asked many students whether or not they enjoyed it, and it has been made clear that hearing a fun song at the beginning of the day with the rest of your classmates helps boost your mood! As your freshman caucus presidents, we will coordinate with the school to push for at least one "clean" song requested by monthly online poles of students to be played on the loudspeaker for at least 10 seconds.
FRESHMEN HANDBOOK + ALL-INCLUSIVE MAP
When we talked to many of you and your classmates, we found that students should have an easily accessible map of the school. As your presidents, we will create a map that can be used to find bathrooms, the guidance counselors, offices, and rooms that you can’t seem to find! The Freshman Handbook would include both this map of all ten floors, and also a brief rundown of the school year. Among other aspects, the Freshmen Handbook would describe how the A and B schedule works as well as which restaurants near Stuy have student discounts.
STUDY GUIDES
We want to increase the creation and use of study guides for classes provided to students on the Stuyvesant Student Union website by students who are taking or have taken the classes. We want to ask upperclassmen if they have any resources or recommendations for studying! This encourages students to help each other out while bonding with each other. We also want to encourage online or in-person study sessions to help students study for any upcoming exams.
FUNDRAISERS
As your freshmen caucus presidents, we propose various new school fundraisers. An example of such fundraisers includes a scavenger hunt and movie night with blankets and pajamas. This event would occur after January midterms to help students relax, bond with their friends, and create new friendships. An admission and basic food option fee of $5 would be required, and extra food brought by the Student Union, freshman caucus presidents, and campaign managers would be available for students who purchase a VIP ticket. Profits will go to the school and may be used to help purchase materials for students.
COMMUNITY GROUPS
The groups would include online and in-person groups of students who share teachers, are studying for the same tests, and share clubs, made so students feel less alone at Stuyvesant.
SPIRIT COUCH
To motivate students to study and work hard throughout the school year, we propose the Spirit Couch. The Spirit Couch is an organized monthly raffle granting the fortunate winner and up to two friends exclusive access to a comfortable front-row couch setup with included snacks and drink at a Stuyvesant sports game if permitted. This creates a memorable opportunity for them to enjoy the game alongside their friends. Students would get two raffle tickets if they have a 93% GPA or higher, and three raffle tickets if they have completed the monthly library reading challenge.
DISCOUNTS
We strive to bring about further discounts for foods and drinks at establishments near Stuyvesant. An example of these discounts may include price reductions at restaurants at Brookfield Place.
OPEN CAUCUS MEETINGS
One of our main goals is to represent the entire Stuyvesant freshmen community. Therefore, as caucus presidents, we will invite and encourage freshmen students to attend caucus meetings to propose ideas, evaluate and explain their opinions, and ask questions. This will help increase the transparency of our work and will allow us to represent the true opinions of the freshmen class.
