For you to obtain the maximum benefit from this course, it is expected that you attend class. If you are absent, please go to Moodle for missed material in addition to checking with a classmate or myself. If your absence is excused or verified by the Academic Dean's office, then Dr. B will send you the annotated slides from class or ensure that you receive annotated slides from one of your classmates (the latter in the event of technical glitches).
If you are feeling ill, please do not come to class. COVID is still prevalent and it is better to not spread any illness to your classmates, especially COVID. To have your absence count as an excused absence, please go to student health so that Dr. B will receive notice that you have been seen by a health professional. If you go to a local healthcare clinic then you can submit the information to the Academic Dean's office, so that your absence is verified.
If you travel for academic or athletic reasons, please provide Dr. B with the appropriate form from the Academic Dean's office. The faculty or department in charge of the trip usually communicates with the Dean's office and will normally distribute the form to students.
If you travel due to post-graduation interviews, please forward Dr. B an email from the interviewing institution / individual which indicates the date for the absence to count as an excused absence.
If you have a family emergency, please contact the Academic Dean's office so that the University can support you during this time. They will also contact Dr. B indicating that you will be absent, which will count as an excused absence.
Formal attendance requirements are the minimum guidelines as given in the Furman catalog. If you miss more than 25% of the class sessions due to unexcused absences you will be in violation of the maximum established by the University (Furman University Catalog) and will be dropped from the course with a grade of “F” unless the absences were due to providential reasons, in which cases a withdrawal (W) grade may be assigned after consultation with the Associate Academic Dean.
Once class has started, you are expected to close laptops and put away phones unless asked to access these devices, which you will be informed of in advance. You are welcome to annotate slides using a tablet during class.
Smart watches, tablets and phones must be placed in a bag or not brought to class during tests.
Announcements related to the class will be communicated via email and in class.
Course assignments are to be completed by the date and time indicated. Assignments will lose 5% of the final grade per day after the due date. Under emergency circumstances (illness, family emergency, etc.), and with appropriate documentation, I will offer full credit for late assignments. If you are having trouble completing an assignment, please talk to me before the assignment is due so we can resolve the issue together.
Nearly all submissions must be submitted as pdf files. Submit assignments to Moodle, unless email is indicated. Please contact me if you are worried about whether your assignment uploaded correctly or if you have any other technical difficulties.
Because this class benefits from a participatory community, people who disrupt the community by their words or actions disrupt our collective opportunity to learn. Rude, sarcastic, obscene, or disrespectful speech and disruptive behavior have a negative impact on everyone's learning. When a person disrupts the class in these ways, I will remove the disruptive person from the class. If an incident occurs:
1st Incident: I will address the behavior with you immediately and follow-up after class or with a scheduled meeting as soon as possible.
2nd Incident: I will refer you immediately to the chair/dean. The chair/dean will remind you that repeated deviations from expected classroom behavior may result in disciplinary action.
Final Exam Policy
There will be a Final Exam for this course on December 16th at noon. All students are expected to take the exam at this time. As dictated by Furman’s policy on Final Exams, students with extreme extenuating circumstances may appeal fora schedule change. To do so, you must submit a written request to the Associate Academic Dean (academic.deans@furman.edu) at least 4 weeks prior to the exam. Students who receive approval for a final exam schedule change from the Associate Academic Dean should forward that approval to me as soon as it is received so that we can arrange for a mutually amenable alternative time. Students whose requests are denied by the Associated Academic Dean will be required to take the Final Exam at the scheduled time.
Food in Class
You are welcome to bring a snack or lunch to eat in class. Please do not bring food that is particularly odoriferous or where the container is noisy, but otherwise, you are welcome to eat in class.
SOAR
Students with documented disabilities who need academic accommodations should contact SOAR (x2320). This should be done early in the term. After I have received documentation from SOAR, please reach out to set up a brief meeting.
