ARTIST STATEMENT
The body of work seeks to re-examine the socio-political structures and conditions that surrounds the black female sexuality and physicality in contemporary society.
The artist uses her own identity (conceptual self- portraits) to explore the concept of femininity, sensuality and sexuality.
Muse uses monochromatic self-portraits of the female body to inquire about all the ways women have been made to feel inauthentic about themselves; to reclaim the body ,experience, and life back.
Muse investigates the politics that surround the black female body in contemporary culture.
The artist uses monochromatic conceptual performative self-portraiture to explore identity of the black female gender in contemporary society and culture.
Muse explores identity politics, gaze and is a visual representation of the black intersectional groups in contemporary African society and diaspora.
Muse is inspired by a desire to explore self (psyche) in contemporary African society and culture. In a society that follows the norm associated with gender, being genuinely true to your being and self exploration is a forbidden act or political act by the law, ‘Muse’ implies that a person is free to be. Muse reevaluates and dismisses the sociopolitical and cultural structures that surround gender in African society and diaspora.
Muse proposes that a person is free to be however they choose to be. Muse seeks a world of equality, freedom and justice while dismantling the sociopolitical structures and conditions that surround the issue of gender.
