ARTIST STATEMENT
The body of work “Geum” (The religion of my identity) tells a story of the history of my personal identity. Geum explore and investigate themes of decolonization, afrofuturism, self discovery, freedom and healing. Geum uses photography and experimental media to mainly portray and embody the essence of the dark divine feminine in relations to African knowledge system.
INDOCTRINATION
tells a story of the artist being born into a conservative Christian church in an overly religious family.
This restricted self expression in certain areas during most of childhood and teenage years.
SELF BAPTISM
tells a story of endings, death and unlearning, leaving behind of thoughts, ideas, practices, experiences, beliefs and more that no longer serve her well.
This is a metaphor for being born again.
REBIRTH
She rebirths as the powerful Goddess “Mawu-Lisa”.
Mawu-Lisa is a creator goddess associated with the moon and sun in Dahomey mythology. Mawu is associated with the (moon), creativity, Universal law, passion, abundance, birth and inspiration.
When creating this body of work she was drawn to the African Goddess “Mawu-Lisa”. This led to channeling and referencing the powerful creator goddess, Mawu-lisa.
