Recently, I am interested in the topic “how to attract foreign travelers to local areas”. Therefore, I would like to employ PBL (Project-Based-Learning) and the learning scenario is as follows.
Prof. Yang, who teaches sociology in Matsue University and is a coordinator of the class “how to contribute to the local community”, wants to set a theme “how to attract foreign travelers to Matsue city”. He decided to make a learning scenario as follows. Furthermore, Students are required to make portfolio to collect deliverables and reflect at the end of this class.
Steps of the class "How to attract foreign travelers to Matsue city"
Students do not have any knowledge and skills such as finding valid resources and making prototypes. So, teaching assistants, who experienced the similar project in the past, will be added as a model group and demonstrate the investigation and explain important points such as resources and method for investigation. TA will help students in each important step such as investigating and interviewing.
The related learning theory included in this learning scenario is “Social Cognitivism”. The participation of TA and their group will be work as a good model for students. The observation of this TA group will influence student’s behaviors.
The complex learning project to assess the learning scenario above is basically worked on ePortfolio. To assess the process and the results of students in PBL, students submit their ePortfolio in the capstones below.
In each step, students will use rubric and self-assessment their portfolio. If they understand their achievement is not enough, they will improve ePortfolio, Furthermore, students will peer-review their portfolio using rubric and students improve their portfolio again.
The students’ ePortfolio, their evaluation based on rubric, and their reflection will work as an authentic assessment compared to the multiple choices to check their knowledge and skills. And it will work as a formative evaluation because if students could not achieve what prof. Cheng expected, he can change the content or can spare more time to the step.

Regarding authentic assessment, I have never experienced. For example, the exam and tests of the google digital workshop were mainly performance test to check whether I could acquire the specific knowledge and skills. Most tests were multiple choices tests and the evaluation was not placed in the learning process. Bu the way, I understand that this course "EDX100: Learning Theory" focuses on authentic assessment. Making portfolio and self-assessment must be placed as a learning because checking portfolio and reflecting past experiences after learning learning theories deepened my understanding to the learning theories.
