Gathering news is not a simple task. It starts with identifying a newsworthy event or topic. This can involve doing research on several sources such as social media, the news, and different articles or magazines. Journalists might gather information through interviews and personal experiences. Throughout this process of news gathering, the journalist must return to its roots and adhere to ethical standards and ensuring that what they are reporting on is also transparent.
As Editor-in-Chief, I encourage my team to pursue diversity and always obtain another side to the story. Additionally, I offer support in structuring the stories to ensure clarity. In broadcast, you have to gather information and fact-check everything to ensure a safe and reliable source for your targeted audience. You have to stay on point with your news gathering skills to ensure you have a response to whatever situation you might be facing.
For instance, if you are interviewing someone and they say something that might interest you and your audience more than your planned questionnaire, you have to be prompt and ready to formulate a question and get them to open up more on that certain topic.
Throughout the years, I've learned that the process of gathering news requires dedication and a eye for minor details, which will all count in the end.
