Generation Global teaches students the art of dialogue over debate. Learners use critical thinking and active listening to explore global issues and understand values of their peers. One of my favorite aspects is that many of these activities, such as listening and responding to hate speech, are available to download and classroom ready. Many of these activities do not require technology. It is important that your space is ready for learners to talk and reflect. Getting Smart is a great resource for those looking to ground their practice in Place-Based Education (PBE). PBE is a framework that allows learners to investigate the world starting right outside the classroom doors. The framework encourages one to ask essential questions—What are our local myths and legends? What contemporary challenges is our community facing? How does our unique geography shape how we live? Learners who engage in this framework begin to see their neighborhood as a living textbook. Getting Smart’s guidebooks provide tools to help learners analyze the people, history, and systems that define their home. The National Association for Media Literacy Education(NAMLE) provides strategies to examine and discuss media literacy in an education space. NAMLE’s framework encourages learners to look beyond the surface of a message to explore the broader environment in which it was created—including the purpose, audience, and influence behind the media. This helps learners become critical thinkers in a digital world that is constantly producing media at an increasingly rapid rate. The National Mall is home to our nation’s most iconic memorials and historic landmarks. Through their educational portal, educators can access ready-to-use scavenger hunts and lesson plans that bring American history to life. These resources allow learners to explore the significance of these sites and the stories they tell, all without leaving the classroom.
