Grades will be routinely updated on Canvas so that you should know your progress. The grading is based off the following:
Lecture Participation - 5%
Online Homework - 15%
Group Quizzes - 10%
Lab - 25%
Unit Exams - 30%
Final Exam - 15%
Online Homework - 15%
Under ‘Modules’ and ‘Assignments’ in Canvas, you will find a link that opens a new window to the app . Please download the app if you have a mobile device, to utilize during lecture.
Homework is broken down by topics to complete in short time periods. The average number of problems in an assignment are 5 questions and each set is considered to take 20-30 min to complete. The longer you take, the better you are trying to understand the material and the more it will sink in, so please do not fret if it seems that you are taking time on the online homework.
The online homework are due 3 days a week, M/W/F of the week at 11:59 PM. You have about 2 weeks after the lecture to complete that topic’s assignment
There are quite a number of homework sets. ~53 days worth! Doing homework, the same day as lecture will be the absolute best way to learn the material and not miss an assignment. You can always complete homework late, but it will not count towards any homework points.
You typically have 3 tries per question.
If you are having trouble with a question or understanding the answer, contact me (especially if you cannot make the student hours.)
Another option is to go to the tutoring center for guidance! They want you to hang out there! So check it out and hang out there!!!
Please please do not go through the homework guessing. If you have 1 last attempt remaining, don’t guess! Reach out to me! Microsoft Teams is a great way to ask about a question for others to see too.
There will be group quizzes during lecture. Students typically take these quizzes using their smartphone. If a student will not have means to access the app during lecture, then the student can submit their work on a piece of paper assuming they are viewing the problems with their quiz group. Quizzes will take place in the middle of class just before a class 5 min. break and will take no more than 10 min. You are given 1 chance per question. Doing online homework early benefits for these quizzes. 25% of the quiz will be given for class participation and 75% will be based on the correct answer. You are allowed 2 make-up quizzes to be completed at the end your lab work or during the instructor’s office hours.
There will be 3 exams. Exam questions will be like the online homework and problems solved in class. All exams are worth 100 points. Make-up exams will be offered only with a very serious and verifiable excuse and arranged prior to the exam hour.
Your course grade will be not complete until you take the final. Thus, it is the final step in order for you to pass the class. It will cover all chapters covered throughout the semester (including the last unit that had not had an exam). Of the 150 points, 50 points will be just chapter 11, 12 and 14.
The final exam will be given on
Thursday, Dec. 15 from 8:00 am - 10:00 am.
There are additional practice problems within Aktiv Chemistry. Doing a practice set with 80% correct will award you 2-point extra credit for that problem set. There is no deadline except the last day before the final exam.
Throughout the semester, I will announce seminars on our class Canvas homepage. Each attendance is worth 1 pt. You will need to sign in to the attendance sheet, so I can record your attendance and give credit.
Grades are not based on a curve; all grades add from the points you earn for all activities: Conceptual Academy activities, Canvas discussion board, special project, and exams. I will try to have the most up-to-date grades in the grade section of Canvas; go to the far right column in Canvas under ‘Grades’. Your percentage score will be rounded to the nearest whole number and a letter grade will be assigned as follows:
A (pass): 89.5 – 100.0%
B (pass): 79.5 – 89.4%
C (pass): 69.5 – 79.4%
D (not pass): 59.5 – 69.4%
F (not pass): < 59.4
