It is my greatest hope that our online “togetherness” feels safe and rewarding. I welcome you to speak your mind, express ideas and viewpoints of any kind, but ask that you be kind and considerate to your fellow classmates when doing so within our course and to continue this respectful dialogue outside our course. I will encourage dialogue among you and your classmates in our discussion assignments that could bring up some interesting conversations. For example, how should we approach climate change? Who should have best received the Nobel Prize? Is Chegg a suitable resource for learning? I will be present in all discussions and will even participate to support your discourse and ideas. If at any moment, you have concerns please feel free to reach out to me by email or during my student hours.
Ohlone students studying in a group. (c) Ohlone College
This class will sometimes feel very foreign. The content will seemingly get more complicated because the material will build upon previous chapters; and I will need to know how you are honestly progressing using my assessment methods. To be certain, all of your coursework must be a result of your own efforts. I understand that there could be times when you may feel pressured and overwhelmed by the demands of school, work, and personal commitments. Life can really pour down on us. Regardless of the level of stress you may be experiencing, your approach to your course work must be completed with honesty and integrity.
Any matter of academic dishonesty, including cheating and plagiarism, will be reported to the Vice-President of Student Services and the Academic Dean. Here is a link to Ohlone College’s Procedure for Academic Dishonesty. Please be aware that violating the college's academic integrity policies may compromise your academic career. Academic dishonesty goes on a student’s record and may result in expulsion. Students involved in academic dishonesty situations commonly ask me about their dilemma when filling a transfer college application and that is not a situation you want to see yourself in. Another thing to think about is that you would be de-valuing your resulting degree or certificate when you enter the workforce or transfer and cannot meet the expectations that your degree or certification requires.
Course material is developed by Pearson Ed. and is their intellectual property. You may not publicly share or upload Pearson Ed. materials or instructor-generated material for this course such as exam questions without instructor consent.
To keep you on pace with the chapter material, you have 2 weeks after the lecture to complete the homework. Beyond that, you will be significantly behind that generally there are not extensions to the homework. Extensions are only provided on a case-by-case basis.
Lab Reports are due one week after the lab. While the report points becomes reduced in a 1-2 pts if submitted beyond the due date, the report will not be accepted after 2 weeks. Extensions are only provided on a case-by-case basis.
Your participation is important for the success of this course, but I also recognize that you are human, and life happens. If you have reached a point where you have fallen behind, or can't meet the due dates, please contact me. We'll work together to make a path to success.
The last day to drop our course with a refund is Sunday, Sept. 11. There will not be a “W” on your transcript if you drop before this date and it will not be known that you had registered for the course.
The last withdrawal date for our course, which will create a “W” = Withdrawal on your transcript is Monday, Nov. 14.
Please know that I will never drop you from the course, even if you have stopped logging into our course and have failed to turn in assignments on time. You are the only person able to drop yourself from the course if you want to withdraw (within the appropriate timeframe). I will e-mail you if you are not logged into the course for more than 2 weeks, and will suggest your options on withdrawing or how to continue forward with the course.
I hope that no one in the course contracts Covid during the semester, but to be prepared if you become positive, let’s review what you should do.
If you are feeling ill and are concerned that it is Covid: Don’t come to campus. It is best to err on that you are brewing Covid in your body and you do not want to expose others unintentionally. As soon as possible, get a Covid test (PCR or antigen). At this point, you do not report anything to the college, you must wait and see if you do and become positive confirmed by a Covid test. If you are feeling better and have a negative test, these are signs that it is safe for you to come to campus.
If you test positive: The first thing is to notify the college. This form is not for reporting an exposure or if you are feeling symptomatic. The college will let you know when you can return to campus and will give further instruction.
What about my missed classwork when I am Covid-positive? If you are sick and need a few days off from classwork, it is understandable. I will ask that you do what you can and take the lead on what is reasonable for yourself. While I do not want to push yourself when sick, I will ask if you can keep abreast of the class as well as you can. Typically, not all the time during quarantining is being sick. The good news is that Chem 102 can be completed on your own while you quarantine, and this is how:
o Lecture material: All lecture slides have text written below the slide as if I am lecturing. These notes along with reading the slides are sufficient to learn the material. In addition, you have the textbook sections that you can fully read in parallel to the lecture slides. These two materials will allow you to complete the respective online homework. Of course, you can e-mail me, chat within Microsoft Teams, and/or meet up during Student Hours to keep you on track with the material and ask questions. Any quizzes can be made up during this time at a future date. In-class problems can also be made up if you did not complete within the 12 hr window that you have after lecture.
o Lab: LabFlow is designed so you can take the lab virtually with given data. You will select the option “virtual”, which gives you the data to complete the lab report. I will extend your pre-quiz and lab report if needed and we will discuss together your extension timeline.
o Exams: If you miss an exam due to Covid quarantining, you can take the exam when you have completed your quarantine and are able to return to campus. You will take the exam during your scheduled lab, and that lab’s activity will be completed virtually.
