ChatGPT could automate job-hiring practices. It can allow human-resource officers to quickly parse through job applications and find sufficient candidates to hire based on a predetermined job description. Some believe this automation may lead to job displacement as there will be less work than before. Others believe this automation will allow human-resource officers to spend their time on more creative endeavours that are not easy to automate, like training new employees and facilitating opportunities for employee growth and development (Cathey, 2023).
Another implication of using ChatGPT in an employment setting is that it may lead to further discrimination of marginalized groups. It may lead ChatGPT to favour candidates that meet the stereotypical preconceptions, thereby favouring men in male-dominated industries like engineering and technology and furthering the gender gap (Hill, 2023).
ChatGPT has the opportunity to both enhance and hinder education. Since ChatGPT can recall the context of a conversation and respond appropriately, it could be used to provide a personalized learning environment for students. However, ChatGPT could also contribute to the spread of misinformation in educational contexts, unless strictly monitored.
ChatGPT also makes it easier for students to plagiarize assignments since it will generate written responses where the format can be specified to match guidelines. Furthermore, ChatGPT can generate two completely different responses, even when given the same prompt. This means that teachers will need to get creative with assignments to ensure that students do not use ChatGPT to cheat.
Since ChatGPT works conversationally, it can improve its accessibility for users that do not regularly interact with technology, like older users. Furthermore, the conversational interface can improve the understanding of topics by users, as it can adjust how it presents the information to foster understanding.
As repeatedly mentioned throughout this interactive learning resource, the ChatGPT responses are generated by analyzing patterns in datasets. Therefore, indications of biases within the training sets may lead to biased responses by ChatGPT. This further emphasizes the importance of human oversight in the responses produced by ChatGPT.
