We expect every athlete to attend all practices. However, we do understand that things come up! Please see the list below on what would be considered an excused or unexcused absence:
Excused Absences*
Academic-Related Activities - please let a coach know if anything comes up that interferes with practice. School comes first!
Quizzes/Tests/Exams
School-Sponsored Field Trips
School-Sponsored Study Hall
Family vacation - pre-planned well before and communicated with coaches
Please email Coach McKenna about any known family vacations as soon as you know the dates you'll be gone. Failing to communicate this will result in a "unexcused" absence.
Please see note below**
School-Sponsored Extracurricular Activities
Marching Band
Theater
Art
Knowledge or Quiz Bowl
Doctor's Appointments
If it is a appointment that is during school hours on a meet day a doctor's note will be required
If it is a regular appointment that has been communicated with a coach no note is needed
Religious or cultural observance
College Visits (with advance notice)
*Excused absences will not impact lettering eligbility. Consistent communication with your coach will ensure that no absences that would be considered excused get marked as an unexcused absence.
Unexcused Absences*
Ditching or purposefully not attending practice outside of the excused list
Skipping school without an appropriate reason
If you miss school on the day of the meet for a unexcused reason you will not be allowed to participate in that night's competition.
Missing practice due to work
Missing practice due to other sports schedules - especially non-school sponsored programs
*Unexcused absences WILL impact your eligibility to letter at the end of the season
Communication Policy:
Coaches will be available in-person and over phone/text/email
The coaches will send out a weekly email on Sunday afternoons regarding any events coming up or schedule changes parents/guardians should be aware of.
If you know of something ahead of time please let the coaches know ASAP
If you are running late to practice, please text or call the coaches
Family Vacations**
While we value family time, taking vacations during the high school season is discouraged. We do understand that this is sometimes unavoidable. The season is very short so we want to make sure our athletes attend as many practices as they can.
MEA Break: Our season does span over MEA break. We encourage that families do not take a vacation during this time since it falls close to our championship meets. However, if you already have something planned please let a coach know ASAP so we can plan ahead!
8th Grade DC Trip: This trip does happen during the high school season. 8th graders who wish to participate in this trip are encouraged to do so and this would count as a excused absence.
