Hot Tips Section
We've reserved this section for some simple recipes designed to avoid food waste. Here are a couple you might not yet have come across:
Frozen yoghurt: Did you know you can freeze most types of yogurt to prevent it going off in the fridge ? You can either freeze it in its original pot, or transfer it into a new one. After you've thawed it out, give it a good mix before use. A couple of 'don'ts': 1) avoid overfilling the container - water expands when it freezes, so leave enough space above the liquid. 2) never freeze in glass containers. 3) Always use the thicker and creamier varieties of Yoghurt for this - some of the thinner (and usually cheaper) yoghurts don't freeze well and tend to coagulate on thawing.
Frozen Sliced banana: If you're ever faced with an excess of ripe bananas, and you know you won't be able to use them all before they become inedible, why not try freezing some of them ? Contrary to popular belief, they taste fine after thawing, and will provide a sweet and non-fattening a iced treat as an alternative to that 'universal destroyer of diets', ice cream. They will even help with your 5-a-day quota by providing some of your daily potassium requirement. Remember to peel them first though and cut them into small segments, then freeze them on a small tray before bagging up - you'll just end up with a mushy mess otherwise !! (Tip: take a couple of segments out of the freezer and let them thaw for a few minutes before eating - frozen banana at -15oC can be quite a challenge to the teeth and gums!)
