Collaboration in the class allows for students to learn how to work together and those with a variety of backgrounds. This is something that they'll find they have to do a lot in their future so it allows for them to know how they work with others vs. how others work with them. It's an important skill that also deals with a lot of communication and their ability to take lead on things.
Working in a special education school for the past year, I think it can be hard work to get students to be able to work with each other sometimes for certain things but it's definitely expected. We shouldn't assume that it would be an easy task when the students see things differently, even with something as asking them to work with another peer.
I do think that a very easy way to get students to start working with each other is to raise a question of any kind and asking for their opinion on it. It promotes a discussion in which each of the students can partake in and eventually have their own conversations with each other. I've found that it works really well whenever I've tried during circle time in the mornings.
(*Featured here are some students from the class I do fieldwork at working together in making sure their class pet, Phoebe, isn't hurt at all as they interact with her)
This is a lesson I had created that was combined as a mini-history lesson as well as a dance lesson on the Filipino cultural dance, Tinikling. This dances requires a lot of collaboration between the dancers and the clickers as they try to avoid having their ankles clicked by the bamboo sticks while moving fluidly.
A love letter to my club, Kapamilya, this video was meant to showcase all the hard work that was put into creating our 13th annual PCN--- Dilaw. Starting as early as Fall 2024, these were videos compiled of the behind-the-scenes process from set-creating to many, many rehearsals all leading up to show day.
