Create a fluid line of communication between myself and parents/community members, to help the band better serve their goals, as well as ours.
Input from community members and parents helps to build the band, who are then better suited to serve their community.
1) Create a respectful and welcoming environment for communication to happen in.
a. Keep conversation courteous, and always listen constructively.
b. Provide literature to students that lets parents/community members know that their voice is welcome.
c. Always show interest in ideas, even if they aren’t in line with your vision; divergent thinking is key to creation.
2) Be readily available to parents/community members so that they can voice ideas or concerns efficiently.
a. Allow multiple modes of contact, including email, phone, text, and conventional mail.
b. Build a comments section of sorts into my teaching website, to provide another means of contact for those that had a hard time finding access my other modes of contact.
c. Answer email/messages in a timely manner, so as not to let someone feel as if their voice was unheard or ignored.
3) Facilitate conversation, so that ideas can be built upon and not forgotten.
a. Put out constant invitations for feedback, to students as well as parents/community members.
b. Create a log for communications, that documents reason for conversations as well as what was spoken about, so that good ideas aren’t lost or forgotten.
c. Follow through with the other strategies, and create methods to hold myself accountable for that.
