The Theory & Practice section highlights the educational and leadership theories that have influenced my development as a doctoral candidate in Educational Technology Leadership. Throughout the doctoral program, I have explored research, instructional design, leadership, and learning theories that continue to shape my approach to teaching, scholarship, and professional practice. These theories provide the foundation for my research interests and guide how I design meaningful learning experiences that connect theory with authentic application.
Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes that learning occurs through a continuous cycle of concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation (Kolb, 1984). This theory closely aligns with my research agenda because simulation-based learning provides students with authentic opportunities to apply knowledge, reflect on their experiences, and strengthen critical thinking and decision-making skills.
Dewey (1938) believed that meaningful learning develops through authentic experiences connected to real-life situations. His work continues to influence my philosophy that education should prepare students to apply classroom knowledge in meaningful professional contexts rather than simply acquire theoretical knowledge.
Brown and Green (2024) emphasize that instructional technologies should be intentionally designed to improve learning outcomes. Their work has shaped my approach to developing learner-centered instructional experiences that promote engagement, collaboration, and workforce readiness through thoughtful instructional design.
Greenleaf (1977) described servant leadership as an approach that prioritizes serving others while supporting their personal and professional growth. This philosophy guides my work as an educator by encouraging collaboration, mentoring, and creating learning environments where students and colleagues can succeed.
Adaptive Leadership focuses on helping individuals and organizations respond effectively to change and complex challenges (Heifetz et al., 2009). This perspective has strengthened my ability to embrace innovation and remain flexible as educational technology continues to evolve.
Northouse (2022) explains that effective leadership is built upon relationships, ethical decision-making, communication, and collaboration. These principles continue to influence my leadership philosophy as I work to support students, faculty, and colleagues while contributing to meaningful educational change.
The theories explored throughout the doctoral program continue to influence my teaching, research, and leadership. They have guided the development of my instructional design projects, simulation-based learning activities, research proposals, and Professional Growth Plan. These experiences have strengthened my commitment to designing learner-centered environments that prepare students for success beyond the classroom.
Studying educational and leadership theories has strengthened my ability to connect research with practice and provided a solid foundation for my future dissertation. As I continue to grow as an educator, researcher, and educational technology leader, these theories will continue to guide my decisions, shape my research agenda, and support my commitment to improving teaching and learning through educational technology and experiential learning.
