Title: Damage Modelling and Creep-Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of Gas Turbine Disk Fir-Tree Using Finite Element Analysis
Funding Agency: GTRE (Gas Turbine Research Establishment)Project Duration: 4 years (initially 3 years)Project Cost: 525.6664 Lakhs
Key Objectives:• Examine damage and fracture resistance under creep-fatigue conditions• Model the fir-tree structure of gas turbine disks using elasto-viscoplastic damage models• Develop configurational force-based crack path and driving force calculations• Conduct CFCG (Creep-Fatigue Crack Growth) simulations
Deliverables:• Damage model of fir-tree structure with raw data and methodology• Microstructural and fractographic analysis of failed components• FEM simulations validated with experimental data
Expertise Applied:• Advanced Abaqus FEM simulations• High-temperature materials testing (550-700°C)• Configurational forces methodology• Creep-fatigue damage characterization

Advanced Research Project: AERB Pressure Tube Materials
Title: Evaluation of orientation dependent tensile properties, flow curves and Hill's Parameters for modelling Pressure tube behavior at different strains, strain rates and elevated temperatures
Funding Agency: CSRP-AERB (Atomic Energy Regulatory Board)Program Coordinator: Dr. Ritu J Singh (NSAD, AERB)Project PI: Dr. Abhishek Tiwari, IIT RoparProject Co-PI: Dr. Pratik K Ray, IIT RoparProject Duration: 3 years (Started June 21, 2024)
Key Research Focus:• Orientation-dependent tensile properties of Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube material• Flow curves at multiple temperatures (25-800°C) and strain rates• Hill's anisotropic parameters for material modeling• Advanced characterization using Digital Image Correlation (DIC)
Testing Methodology:• Miniature tensile specimens with multiple orientations (Axial, Transverse, Axial-Transverse, Radial)• Ring tensile tests for studying specimen geometry effects• High-temperature shear testing (up to 800°C)• ~153 specimens total with multiaxial strain measurement
Key Deliverables:• Comprehensive material property database for Zr-2.5Nb alloy• Anisotropic constitutive material models• Validated FEM subroutines for Abaqus implementation• Technical reports and publications
