You will create a piece of jewelry or an amulet designed to protect or empower you.
This can be interpreted as loosely or as specifically as you desire.
Something can be made to protect or empower simply because it brings you joy.
A ceramic piece of jewelry can also protect or empower through the visual impact/ message it delivers based on the design elements.
1) Choose your purpose(s) for the object that you will create. Consider:
Visual impact - Is the visual form more important than the function? (i.e. a wearable item that may be uncomfortable but looks interesting)
Is it a symbol of comfort? Joy? How so?
Is it an object that gives protection? How so?
2) Create three thumbnails based on your idea.
As you draw, consider the handbuilding technique that would work best to carry out your design.
In most cases, working from a slab will probably make the most sense.
You can use mind-mapping to brainstorm the imagery you want to create.
Visit the vocabulary page to take a look at the elements of art and principles of design to help you guide your design choices.
Remember, you should use texture: additive, subtractive, impressive.
If you make a pendant, show in your sketch the placement of the hole or piercing for the necklace in your design.
3) Choose the thumbnail that is your best idea, and take it to Miss Espinosa for approval. Be prepared to discuss the items in #4 below.

Thumbnail/ Sketch Process (1pt)
During the sketching process, you can work through the same idea in multiple steps or drawings. My final idea is abstracted from my original drawing.

My ceramic piece will be a pendant (wearable).

What is your subject?
It is inspired by two barn owls nesting together.
Q2 - (3 pts) - Does it bring you joy or comfort, or does it protect? How so?
This piece has a protection element to it. I based my pendant off of owls, because they are fascinating and powerful animals. Unlike hawks or eagles, they hunt at night and people rarely see them. I used a reference photo of two barn owls snuggling together because no matter how powerful, strong, or independent I think I am, I need and value the strong friendships in my life. I protect my friends, and they protect me. We guard each other with our metaphorical wings.

3a - (3 pts) - How do you intend to use clay to visually represent the meaning behind your piece?
Through my sketching process, I have abstracted my original drawing of two owls. I don't believe I need the final pendant to be a literal representation of my idea. I am showing two round shapes in the middle joined together to represent the two owls (a relationship). The two geometric shapes on the outside represent the wings, protecting the people on the inside.
3b - (3 pts) - Which element(s) of art will be the focus of your design? (Color, form, line shape, space, texture, value.) Why have you chosen this element?
I am using shape and space to drive my form. The empty spaces show there are two different people who are connected, but not totally one. Using contrasting shapes also helps illustrate the relationship and and protection component. The soft, organic shapes in the middle show that we are sensitive humans, while the harder, more geometric shapes on the outside represent the strong wings and protective spirit we have for our friends.
Q4 - (2 pts) - Will this be built using slab or another handbuilding technique? Why?
This will be built using slab technique, because the pendant is a flat design with multiple pieces attached through scratch and wet.
