One of the primary factors to getting a quality nights sleep is elevating stress off of all joints bones and organs. The recommended position to sleep is on our backs with our hands flat on our sides to allow blood flow and spread our weight across the entire surface of the body with our body slightly elevated to open the jaw and shift our weight slightly to our hips which is a support area that is use to carrying a little extra weight. However, people who are over weight tend to increase the pressure on their lower back and the jaw sinks into the throat closes airways, making it harder to breath. This position often ends up with a very tired person tossing and turning all night until they find the position that eliminates both of those problems.
The most common sleep position done by most people is sleeping on the side of our body. For people who are over weight, this takes the pressure off of the back completely but puts tremendous pressure on the shoulders & Hips. In addition, its important to keep the hands opened and flat to allow blood flow into the hands, and that can be a little difficult as a side sleeper. also, sleeping on the right increases chances of heartburn while sleeping on the left side takes pressure off the lower esophageal sphincter, which is located between your stomach and esophagus.
Another common sleep position is the stomach sleeper. Most people do not sleep flat on their stomachs because of the tension it would put on the neck. The human neck is not designed to stay at a 90 degree angle for an extended period of time. because of this, the stomach position tends to have the sleeper with a leg kicked out to take pressure off of the hip and allowing the body to angle just enough for the head to rest comfortably at about a 45 degree angle. This position is very bad for people with acid reflux, but is very good for people who snore or are over weight. Though all these sleep positions can be very comfortable and allow you to get the sleep you desire, the wrong mattress can make or break our natural sleeping posture and keep us awake all night.
Oxygen is 65% of the body. It needs it to heal and function. So it makes sense that when we sleep, our air channels need to be clear, straight, and relaxed. This allows for oxygen to flow at will and gives our body all the oxygen it can absorb for maximum recovery. The right pillow supports the neck, levels it out so the spinal cord is straight and air can flow through seamlessly. Too many pillows can bend the neck and close those air ways causing snoring and keeping us out of the desired RIM sleep cycle we need to reach in order for our body to truly recovery for the day.
No matter what we do in our live, we are always applying pressure to some point on our body. if we are sitting, all the weight is being placed on our hips and butt making them the points of pressure, when we stand, the pressure is on our feet, knees, ankles and hips and when we sleep, depending on how we sleep, we put that pressure on our hips, back, shoulders and even chest if you areĀ a stomach sleeper. Even at 100 LBS, a side sleeper sleeping on a concrete floor will feel pain in the hip and shoulder because there isn't anything reducing the impact of the hard ground against the hard bones. this is a perfect example of why the right mattress needs to go to the right sleeper.
relaxing sounds such as the ocean crashing against the beach, rain, even grasshoppers chirping, all help in calming the mind and taking it to a place designed to shift the body from stress to recovery, download Google Fit, and be on your way.
Our body is programed to respond to light, if you work 3rd shift or you're a light sleeper, eye cover may be just the thing you need to kick your sleep into over drive.
Melitonin, is the chemical your brain produces to help you sleep and stay asleep. I usually only take the vitamin when I am under the weather but know several people who take it religiously because it helps to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer and its a natural chemical. I have it and recommend it for people who struggle getting a good nights sleep. Use Tylenol PM for emergencies only.
Need a firm mattress, that doesn't give when you lay down. You need to stay flat at all times. The pillow can be large, but make sure that it comes under the shoulders and elevates the body just enough to keep what's in your stomach there and your airways are wide open as your head rest at the top of the pillow.
Need a very soft mattress that conforms to the body. Women who sleep on their sides are prone to pressure point issues and back pain because they naturally have wide hips, small wastes and often narrow shoulders. A hard mattress may leave this body type unsupported in the midsection, increasing pressure on the hips, and mis-align the back. Pillow top mattresses are great for this sleeper and the pillow needs to be big enough to elevate the head level with the rest of the body so your back is straight and aligned
Also need to stay flat and not sink into the mattress since they too lay flat on the bed. any dip and the back will actually bend into an unnatural position and sleep is impossible. A small pillow or no pillow at all is recommended. I sleep with a memory foam pillow and find that I only use the edge of the pillow to keep the tension off my neck while allowing me to get into alignment with my back.
Often mattresses are grudge purchases. Meaning we only buy them because we need to. Though it isn't always fun to spend money on a mattress, you will be glad you did. If money is an issue, remember to get something that will last and offer a great sleep, a FIRM spring mattress with a plush top supports the body and eliminates pressure points. If you'd rather be safe than sorry, get a firm mattress and add a memory foam topper later to help make it softer and spreads the cost out over time. When it comes to springs, the gage of the coils are the main factor. A high Coil gage means softer less durable spring while a low gage is firm and lasts longer. Any queen mattress under $600 needs to be a firm mattress with little cushion if you want the most value. The mattress I recommend under $600 & under is this one. Spend as much or as little on a topper if you are a side sleeper to give you the sleep you need at a price you can afford. Need help finding one? Choose this one. Soft, keeps you cool and is cost effective. If you can afford the 3 Inch Version, I recommend this one, but its a little more in price; however both are a great price at Amazon.com
If money isn't an issue but value is, then look for something that is encased in a foam box. The thicker the outer box, the less movement your mattress will have. Also look for something that has individually pocketed coils, these coils are separated and encased in its own sleeve allowing it to conform to your body better. Firm springs with a nice memory foam top gives a great night sleep for 20 years for a fair price that's worth the extra investment. Cheap memory foam can get hot and breakdown easily so avoid memory foam if you aren't willing to pay for it properly. My Favorite Brand for the shopper in this market is the Simmons BeautyRest Brand. I recommend this shopper spend up to $800 for a queen $1200 for a king but you can find good mattresses starting at around $399. This Price range will give you the 20 years of sleep you expect from a mattress with no complaints. Sealy is also a great brand that offer price points starting as low as $399. just remember that you don't want to shortcut your sleep, your shoes or your chairs, so invest wisely. Never buy anything under 10 inches if you are shopping for anyone over 100 pounds.
Is money not a problem? The Temperpedic mattress series is the best sleep money can buy. These mattresses, conform to your body, remembers its position, eliminates practically all pressure, and wicks away heat and moisture. For those that value sleep but don't have thousands for a mattress, 60 month zero interest financing is available. Its worth it, but only if you can truly afford it.
Another great option for people who truly value there sleep and want quality and value is the new purple brand. Its a very durable product for the price and though I haven't been able to test the product extensively, the make up of the product seems to offer an unmatched longevity due to the rubber like material the primary layer is made of. My next mattress purchase will be this and I cant wait to try it out.
A Medium sized memory foam pillow that allows me to sleep no matter how I pass out for the night. Pillows can get pricey just like mattresses can, so just remember to keep in mind your budget and that sleep is an investment and you will only ever get out what you put in.
