RYA Shorebased Theory Courses

The practical scheme is supplemented by 2 key theory elements. 

These are designed to effectively prepare the student the gain full benefit from the associated practical elements. 

Taking one of these courses need not necessarily be followed immediately with the practical course as there is opportunity to refresh your knowledge within each practical course. 

The venue for theory courses is SARA training facility in Beachley,Gloucestershire.

RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Theory

This course is a introduction to chart work, navigation, seamanship and meteorology. It deals with tidal heights and streams and there effect on you course and also the rules of the road for yachts at sea.

An essential foundation for those wishing to take a Day Skipper practical course. It is offered in a various formats, usually during the winter but also in the summer subject to demand.

Day Skipper (winter) 2 evening per week for 6 weeks – Cost £270 (Includes student pack)

Day Skipper 5 full days (group) – cost £270 (includes student pack)

RYA Sail Training

RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Shorebased Theory

This course develops the knowledge and skills acquired in the Day Skipper course, enabling yachtsmen and powerboaters to undertake more complex passages including both offshore and overnight. 

It covers advanced navigation techniques including position fixing, course to steer, passage planning, pilotage, meteorology, collision regulations, stability and bouyage.


The course is available over the winter but can be arranged, subject to demand at any time. Prices as per Day Skipper

Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory (winter) 2 evening per week for 6 weeks (may require addition evening for assessments)

Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory (group) 5 days
