You will hear extracts from two pieces for piano: one familiar and one unfamiliar.
The familiar extract, Beethoven’s Piano Sonata op. 13 no. 8 in C minor ‘Pathétique’ (5.12-6.42) will be played once.
The unfamiliar extract, Haydn’s Piano Sonata Hob. XVI:20 in C minor (0.00-1.54) will be played three times.
Referring to texture and melody, compare and contrast Beethoven’s and Haydn’s writing for piano.
The scores are provided in the Source Booklet.
You should use your knowledge of musical elements, contexts and language in your response.
