CBU Course Formats
When you register for courses at CBU, here is what you can expect:
Traditional (TR) This course is taught in-person in a physical classroom. The class meeting time and classroom will be listed in Banner.
Hybrid (HYB) This course is taught online AND in-person in a physical classroom. Your professor will provide details. Your Hybrid class should have set times and classroom location listed in Banner for in-person meetings.
Online (WEB or OL) This course is taught entirely online. It may be all asynchronous or have some synchronous elements. Your professor will provide those details.
Asynchronous and Synchronous
Asynchronous: You work on your own schedule according to due dates and assignments provided by your professor in your online Canvas course. Your main forms of communication with your professor will be email, forum discussions and any other means your professor provides. If your course is predominately Asynchronous, the class time will be listed in Banner as "TBA" and there will not be a physical classroom listed. Your professor may provide Synchronous meeting opportunities that are either voluntarily, individually scheduled or class meetings scheduled by a survey of times that best work for students in the class.
Synchronous: You meet with your professor and/or classmates real time in a web conferencing platform (such as WebEx.) If your class is expected to frequently meet Synchronously online, then a class time will be listed in Banner. You will be expected to meet online as a class for some or every class meeting. Your professor will provide these details. There will be no classroom listed in Banner, because you will not meet in-person.
