8 Habits/Skills for Online Course Success
If bringing a computer you already own:
It should not be more than two years old
Have at least 8GB of RAM
Have at least one USB port and WiFi
If you’re buying a new computer, we recommend that at a minimum include:
8GB RAM
Have an i5 or greater/equivalent CPU
Windows 10, or macOS 10.14 (or newer)
an Ethernet port or adaptor and WiFi
Also strongly encouraged:
Include an accidental damage protection warranty
Consider an SSD hard drive for better system battery life and performance
Warnings about specific computers:
Chromebooks do not allow downloads outside of the Chrome Web Store. If your professor requires Respondus test proctoring, Chromebooks cannot download the required software. You will also be unable to download required software for any other courses.
Surface Tablets come with Windows 10s as a default operating system. Windows 10s is not compatible with Respondus test proctoring software. Windows 10s will also prevent you from downloading other required software that is not available in the Microsoft App Store. You can download Respondus and other programs if you disable Windows 10s and upgrade to Windows 10. Here are the directions.
If you need help reconfiguring your Surface, CBU ITS may be able to assist you by emailing help@cbu.edu, phone (901) 321-4438 or going to the ITS Help Desk on campus located in St. Joseph’s Hall.
For classes that have synchronous classes (WebEx meetings) and/or online courses requiring you install proctoring software a webcam may be required. Most new computers come with webcams already installed, but if you need a webcam check out these articles for recommendations:

Make sure your computer has a USB port to support the Webcam. And if you need a headset, too, you may need an additional USB port, depending on the headset.
If you work in a distracting environment or have hearing issues, you may want to purchase a headset or headphones. Headsets will have built in speakers, headphones will just be for hearing. Some Respondus proctored online exams may require a microphone, so if your computer does not have a microphone -- you may want a headset with a mic.

Make sure the headset you are purchasing is compatible with your computer port.
