Introduction

This website contains information and resources to help you setup and deliver teaching using remote group video calls.

COVID-19 has created challenges and opportunities for student placements in general practice. Social distancing guidance could limit face-to-face contact and may change over time.

The guidance on the website is based on our learning from a pilot project. It is also based on advice from information governance leads, ethic groups and medical defence organisations to ensure that students continue to learn during COVID-19. The advice takes into account issues related to consent and confidentiality.

What is virtual teaching

Virtual teaching uses video conferencing technology to connect tutors, students and/or patients to provide learning opportunities remotely. People could be at home and/or at the practice during these encounters.

Types of learning

  1. Tutorials and debriefs

  2. Patient encounters and clinics including remote consultation

  3. Attending practice meetings

Scenarios when you might use virtual teaching

  1. Need to avoid travel eg on public transport

  2. Room space is limited at the practice

  3. Unexpected local lockdown or self-isolation due to Test and Trace

  4. Sheilding and working from home

These scenarios could apply to tutors, students and patients. Virtual teaching offers an option to continue the learning experience for students in the presence of COVID-19 limitations.
