Confidentiality

You should maintain patient confidentiality when you are using video calls. The GMC guidance on confidentiality applies in the virtual setting with some specific areas that need to be understood.

  • If you are using Wi-fi, ensure it is secure

  • You should use a room that maintains privacy.

  • Check and remove sensitive information about another patient from the background.

  • Check and remove sensitive information about another patient on the screen. This will be important when you share screens. You could change the background image.

  • Do NOT video record patient encounters. A recording is not part of the current consent process and has specific governance requirements. Students should remember that this includes video, audio and screen capture recording. Students can make anonymous notes for learning.

  • Remember patients can record consultations (see below for BMA guidance on this)
