Under the training and guidance of the clinical instructors, I have gone through phases of growth both as a student and as a person. I’ve learned how to implement evidence-based intervention strategies and evaluation tools to target client-centered goals, and how to ensure ethical and meaningful client service.
As a CBH-R Worker
I was part of the Education component. During the Planning of the CBH&R Programs, I was involved in collecting data gathered from interviews and the interpretation of said data through analysis tools such as the Problem Tree Analysis. I learned the importance of efficient but natural collection of important data from interviews. While designing the programs, I was a part of planning the activities, specifically the condition and symptom management techniques taught through play, to be included in the program. I assisted in making the guide questions and visuals for the said activities. I also took part in planning and designing marketing and communications materials such as invitations, certificates and posters. I learned the importance of finding evidence-based strategies that are relevant to the participants’ age group and interests. We had to find symptom management techniques that could be integrated with play activities so the program would be efficient and effective.
As we were Implementing the CBH&R Programs, I was in charge of facilitating an activity which was the relaxation technique delivered as the “Balloon activity”. I taught the participants how to perform relaxing breathing techniques by following how a balloon inflates and deflates. Having to host an activity allowed me to learn what it takes to ensure the attention and understanding of the participants. This involved being flexible to their responses and making sure I was brief and understandable in relaying information.
Reflection
OT 323 taught me important lessons about team collaboration and communication, effective communication isn’t just about making sure that tasks are done, but also checking in on the final flow and interrelationships among the group.
I was shown the importance of researching about and talking to a community to gain an accurate picture of their way of life, to ensure that the programs are meaningful and effective to their individual goals.
